Summary: A phone call is all it takes. Post X2.

Sometimes a phone call is all it takes. You've tried so hard to let go, to move on, to do everything Dr. Phil talks about every day when you're watching TV in the afternoons while Erik and Mystique tend their pseudo garden on the balcony. You even fucking physically walked away, left the state, left everything behind and moved on to a new life, to Pyro's life.

Such a fool. Such a fucking fool. You really thought you'd be able to live Pyro's life and not be haunted by everything John left behind.

And a phone call, or lack thereof, is all it takes. You pick up the phone, and you curse the way your heart still flutters in your chest as you dial the numbers and hear his voice in your head, sweet and gentle and everything good and right in the world. And every time the phone picks up and it's not him, you start to sink further and further down, tears forming in your eyes. You're going to end up drowning in them one day, and you won't be able to hang up the phone before it happens.

And you have to bite your lip to keep from screaming every time you're told, "He's asleep, John." or "He's in town, John." or "Can you call back later, John?" You always say okay, and they never notice that you call because you're close to breaking and you need him to keep you glued together. You just hang up the phone and throw it down to the floor, cursing the name Robert over and over until it becomes a mantra.

You want to wrap your hands around that slim throat of his and just choke him, take his air away and scream at him, "How does it feel?!" You just want to fucking kill him, because maybe then he'd be able to see how it makes you feel, but you know you won't, because his neck is much too precious to be touched.

And you try not to cry but you do because it hurts, because you're still putting your life, whether it be Pyro's or John's, on hold for him, and he has never done the same for you or never will. And here's the kicker, here's the part that was just pure hell; Bobby doesn't do this to be spiteful. Bobby doesn't do this because it amuses him. When everyone says he's asleep, John, it's because he actually is asleep.

And it's just way too much, and you have enough in your head already, without him and what he brings, and you just wish you had the strength to stop. They say it takes the most strength to walk away, but it doesn't. You did that, and you're still stuck here. It takes the most strength to STOP, and you simply don't have it.

And all it takes to prove that is just a simple phone call.
