DeKalb County Alliance for Economic Human Rights

The DeKalb County Alliance for Economic Human Rights was formed immediately after the November Poverty Conference which was held locally at Northern Illinois University.  This alliance of local poverty activists has set out to uphold the economic human rights of local impoverished people.  Using the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the alliance hopes to ensure local Government involvement in bettering the lives of poor and low income people in their community.

Participant members include Bread for the World, Habitat for Humanity, Hope Haven, VIP People, DeKalb Interfaith Network for Peace and Justice, Opportunity House, the DeKalb School District, Northern Illinois University, University Resources for Women at NIU, Mi Casa Su Casa, and members of the DeKalb City Council.

Currently, the Alliance has been holding meetings in an effort to gather information about the City of DeKalb's use of federal money in their implementation of the Community Development Block Grant.  The Alliance has also been researching ways to bring low income communities onboard so they can educate the larger DeKalb community about the need for low income and Section 8 housing.

Any questions or comments about the DeKalb Alliance can be directed to VIP People.
