Call for the Conference:

Poverty & Community Organizing:
DeKalb Conference on Economic Justice

November 12 - 14, 1999
Northern Illinois University - Holmes Student Center

featuring:
Kensington Welfare Rights Union

Bringing together the people of DeKalb, including low income residents, student activists, & social service providers, to discuss the problems of poverty in our community and join the national movement to demand basic economic human rights.

As in so many communities in the United States, people in the DeKalb area are faced with the growing problems of low wage work, poverty, hunger, and homelessness. Across America, people are attending organizational schools and building leadership among the poor and their allies in a national movement for basic economic human rights. We believe that in the richest country in the world, everyone has the right to food, affordable housing, education, medical care, and a job at a living wage.

KWRU is an organization of poor and homeless women, men, and children from  all races struggling  both to survive and end poverty. Kensington, located in North Philadelphia, is the poorest area in the state of Pennsylvania. Since 1991, KWRU has secured affordable housing for nearly 500 families in Philadelphia, they have spearheaded the national Economic Human Rights Campaign, testified before Congress, the United Nations, and participated in the 1998 Hague Peace Accords. KWRU is an affiliate of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, and affiliate of the Labor Party and a chapter of the National Welfare Rights Union.

The Conference is Free - Free Childcare - Se Habla Espanol - All sessions translated into Spanish.
