Women's health seems to be very receptive to herbal treatment.
In pregnancy, there are plenty of opportunities to have healthy,
herbal teas that can not only be helpful in conceiving, maintaining
a pregnancy, and aiding labor, but are tasty as well. Below are
a list of ingredients recommended in Susun Weed's 'Wise
Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year.' Mix and match
them for the taste you like.
Red Clover flowers (Trifolium pratense): tones the uterus;
high in protein which is good for the entire body. Full of absorbable
calcium and magnesium to relax the nervous system and promote
fertility. High mineral content can help restore and balance
hormonal dysfunction. Alkalinizes the body and may balance the
acid/alkaline level of the vagina and uterus in favor of conception.
Stinging Nettles (Urtica dioica): uterine tonic and general
nourisher; strengthens the kidneys and adrenals. High in minerals
and chlorophyll, it is excellent for the hormonal system. Can
also be used during pregnancy to ease leg cramps. Good source
of vitamin K, along with alfalfa.
Red Raspberry leaves (Rubus spp.): effective uterine tonic
full of calcium. Can be used throughout mid to late pregnancy
to prepare for labor as well. It helps tone the pelvic muscles,
including the uterus. Contains lots of vitamin C, some vitamin
E, and easily assimilated calcium and iron. Also contains vitamins
A and B complex and many minerals, such as phosphorus and potassium.
My favorite combination for pregnancy tea consists of :
3 parts red raspberry leaves
1 part nettles
1 part oatstraw
1 part alfalfa*
Boil your water on the stove, then drop full tea ball in the
kettle. Let steep several hours. I have a warmer, so it stays
warm the entire time, but you could also rewarm it, or chill
it for ice tea. Honey can be used to sweeten it if it is not
sweet enough already.
*In later pregnancy, alfalfa is beneficial... alfalfa contains
calcium and iron, and can help build up vitamin K in mom.
