The Role of the Law
in God's Plan for Justification
Now we know that what things soever
the law saith, it saith to them
who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped,
and all the world may become guilty before God.
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified
in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested,
being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ
unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation
through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness
for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just,
and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay:
but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is
justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles?
Yes, of the Gentiles also: Seeing it is one God, which shall justify
the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid:
yea, we establish the law. Romans 3: 19-31
Knowing that a man is not justified
by the works of the law,
but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ,
that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works
of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Galatians 2: 16
I do not frustrate the grace of
God: for if righteousness come by the law,
then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:21
Now to him that worketh is the
reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him
that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God
imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they
whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Romans 4: 4-8
The scriptures further state:
... sin shall not have dominion over
you: for ye are not under the law,
but under grace. Romans
6: 14
Those who truly accept Christ as their
personal Savior are no longer under
the condemnation of God's law, it's curse, penalty, and guilt producing
power, and fear; but everyone living is still under it's jurisdiction.
As we live in harmony with it through through the power of God working
in us, we have peace in the soul regarding it.
The law must still be obeyed; but it has no power to save.

What then? shall we sin, because we
are not under the law, but under grace?
God forbid.Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience
unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye
have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Romans 6:15-18
Is the law then against the promises
of God? God forbid: for if there had
been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should
have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that
the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
Galatians 3: 21, 22

it is evident: for,
The just shall live by faith.

What should be our greatest desire?
... that I may win Christ,
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the
law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which
is of God by faith... Philippians 3:8, 9
For therein is the righteousness
of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is
written, The just shall live by faith.
Romans 1:17
Therefore being justified by faith,
we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith
into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5: 1, 2
Jesus said:
... things which are impossible with
men are possible with God. Luke 18:27
Looking Back and
Looking Forward by Faith
... the promise, that he should be the
heir of the world, was not to Abraham,
or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void,
and the promise made of none effect: Because the law worketh wrath:
for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise
might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law,
but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of
us
all...
And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that
raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Who was delivered for our
offences, and was raised again for our justification. Romans 4:13-16, 22-25
... ye are all the children of God
by faith in Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free,
there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs
according to the promise. Galatians 3: 26-29
You can say with assurance:
... the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6: 23
...we believe that through the
grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be
saved... Acts 15: 11
...[Yet some will] perish; because
they received not the love of the truth,
that they might be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2: 10
