Sanctification in the Life

Due to the extended length of this Bible study on Christian Sanctification, it has been divided
into sections, using four separate webpages. Since each part is essential to understanding
the subject more completely, consider downloading all four pages to obtain a

Sanctification Revealed
in the Life

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to
his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the dead,
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away,
reserved in heaven for you,
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be
revealed in the last time.
1 Peter 1:3-5

But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar
people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of
darkness into his marvellous light:
Which in time past [were] not a people, but [are] now the people of God: which
had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
Dearly beloved, I beseech [you] as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly
lusts, which war against the soul;
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak
against you as evildoers, they may by [your] good works, which they shall
behold, glorify God in the day of visitation...
For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the
ignorance of foolish men:
1 Peter 2: 9-12, 15

... the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth
them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart
from iniquity.
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also
of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour,
sanctified, and meet for the master's use, [and] prepared unto every good work.
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with
them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2 Timothy 2: 19 - 22

And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean
and clean...
Leviticus 10:10

... eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
For the eyes of the Lord [are] over the righteous, and his ears are open unto
their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
1 Peter 3: 11, 12

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies,
kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel
against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called
in one body; and be ye thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and
admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Colossians 3:12-17

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as
brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing;
knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from
evil, and his lips that they speak no guile...
1 Peter 3:8-10

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about
with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness,
whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is
the head, even Christ:
Ephesians 4: 14, 15

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing
uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary
part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
Titus 2: 7, 8

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live
soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world...
Titus 2:11-12

Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory
that fadeth not away.
1 Peter 5:3, 4

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word,
in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity...
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing
this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
1 Timothy 4:12, 16

... sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer
to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness
and fear:
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers,
they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
1 Peter 3:15, 16

Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth
forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither [can] a corrupt tree bring
forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the
fire.
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Matthew 7:17-20

For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Ephesians 5:9, 10

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-25

I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the
weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more
blessed to give than to receive.
Acts 20:35

Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers
are few;
Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into
his harvest.
Matthew 9:37, 38

Who shall abide in the Lord's tabernacle:...
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh
the truth in his heart.
Psalms 15:1, 2

Sanctification and Obedience

Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification
of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace
unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
1 Peter 1:2

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto
according to thy word.
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy
commandments.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psalms 119:9-11

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word,
then are ye my disciples indeed...
John 8:31

But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God,
and keep it.
Luke 11:28

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all
them that obey him...
Hebrews 5:9

If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall
I do, that I may have eternal life?
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one,
that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt
not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.
The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up:
what lack I yet?
Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast,
and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and
follow me.
Matthew 19:16-21

He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar,
and the truth is not in him.
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected:
hereby know we that we are in him.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he
walked.
1 John 2:4-6

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
James 4:17

Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of
the commandments of God.
1 Corinthians 7:19

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and
in truth.
And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before
him.
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all
things.
Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments,
and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son
Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And
hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
1 John 3:18-24

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him,
and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Matthew 22:35-40

[Note: if you examine the 10 commandments found in Exodus 20, you will find
that the first four deal with love for God, and the following six address love
for our fellow man.]

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath
fulfilled the law.
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other
commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself.
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Romans 13:8-10

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved
you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to
another.
John 13:34, 35

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should
go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye
shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
These things I command you, that ye love one another.
John 15:16, 17

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus
Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and
not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And
hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a
liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him
verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he
walked.
1 John 2:1-6

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto
unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart
fervently:
1 Peter 1:22

Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments
of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Revelation 14:12

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the
tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Revelation 22:14

Sanctification and the Sabbath

[Note: According to God, the keeping of the seventh-day Sabbath has a
role to play in the sanctification of His people. See Exodus 20: 8-11 below.
By keeping the Sabbath holy there is a cooperation with God in His work to
prepare His children for heaven and eternal life.]

Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall
keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye
may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.
Exodus 31:13

Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them,
that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.
Ezekiel 20:12

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested
on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had
rested from all his work which God created and made.
Genesis 2: 1-3

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not
do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them
is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day,
and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11

The Purpose and Role
of Works in the Christian Life

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do
shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto
my Father.
John 14:12

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust
in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to
enjoy;
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing
to communicate;
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come,
that they may lay hold on eternal life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19

[God] ... will render to every man according to his deeds:To them who by
patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality,
eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth,
but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish,
upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the
Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good,
to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons
with God... (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the
doers of the law shall be justified.
Romans 2:6-11, 13

... let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Hebrews 10:24

... rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be
afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the
same...
Romans 13:3

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man
beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his
way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh
into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful
hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
James 1:22-25

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons,
ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For
whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is
guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do
not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art
become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that
shall be judged by the law of liberty.
James 2:8-12

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith,
and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked,
and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in
peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those
things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith,
if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast
faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will
shew thee my faith by my works.
James 2:14-18

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not
Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son
upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works
was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,
Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and
he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is
justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot
justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent
them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith
without works is dead also.
James 2:20-26

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
James 4:17

LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works
in us.
Isaiah 26:12

But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first,
and also to the Gentile:
Romans 2:10

Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be
rewarded.
2 Chronicles 15:7

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for
ye serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3: 23, 24
