Due to Castle Hill's commanding location looking out to sea above Newhaven,  it has long been a site of importance. The site has been a hill fort since the Neolithic period and continued to be so into the 20th Century. This was especially true during the Second World War.

Gun emplacements from this period are located along the cliff top, with panoramic views to the south, east and west.
