According to  the Islands locals there was a time when the Dingoes were too timid to roam the beach when humans were nearby what this tells me is the animals natural fear of man diminished very slowly over a number of years slowly evolving to the point where there is very little to no fear at all. Maybe it progressed that slowly that most people did not register any real changes due to their lack of observation. Those who did detect the changes in behavior were ignored.

I think local knowledge is the best knowledge what I cannot understand is it seems the Authorities were blind for all those years and did not act earlier to all the tell tale signs and reports. The red flag was there all along  authorities were warned years ago that Dingoes were stalking children obviously these signs along with other problems were not properly addressed and in some cases not addressed at all. Why were these problems that were so obvious ignored? Did it have anything to do with the tourist Dollar?

The eventual death of a person/s was only a matter of time it will be interesting to see the outcome of it all taking out the entire population of Dingoes on the Island is
NOT the answer despatching the offending dog probably was. This is not a learnt behaviour we want bitches teaching their pups. Whether the offending dog was a clean kill or it was one of the other dogs that was shot in the face and spent 2 days frightened and in pain in the scrub after it was shot by one of the Departments you beaut marksmen, I don’t know?

Just how many Dingoes have been dispatched so far anyway? The public has been told 28? I doubt that figure very much. Without jumping to conclusions I heard it was much higher also how humanely was the slaughter carried out?

Fencing off camping areas would only defeat the purpose of being there in the first place unfortunately in this day and age it’s got to the point that we have a situation where it is a case of to enjoy nature in all its splendour we must get well away from the influences of mankind itself. So why go to Fraser?

Spots like these are increasingly becoming few and far between. When these spots are found it is not to long before it is found by others and eventually the area is decimated. A bit like Fraser Island in spots or any major tourist destination that has been literally LOVED TO DEATH! It’s a hard problem to solve I only hope the problem is dealt with sensibly and the kill em all attitude is left well out of it. I kill myself from holding my breath! The death of one child and the mauling of another is indeed tragic. We can only pray that it does not happen again.

What are the choices? Stop tourism on the Island allowing access to locals and Authorities only? Destroy every last Dingo on the Island? Fence of frequently used camping spots? Mark it off as irreclaimable? As Eco-tourisim becomes increasingly more and more popular to the average weekend camper I think you will find the problems will also increase the problems do not necessarily have to involve Dingoes.

The interaction between man and wild animals is as old as time itselft to fool oneself into believing it is a safe practice and nothing can go wrong is foolish. Mans natural curiosity in creatures of interest and danger have caused many fatalities in the past during his quest to study, capture, kill or dominate these types of animals this will never end the same applies to the occasional death, or serious injury that these animals are quite capable of achieving.
