havamal - The
sayings of the vikings:
ADVICE TO A VISITOR:
When passing a door-post, watch as you walk on, inspect as you enter. It is uncertain where enemies lurk or crouch in a dark corner. |
HOW TO SEAT A GUEST:
Giver of the feast! Your guest is here. Where shall he sit? Fast temper grows in a far seat. Prompt him not to prove his mettle. |
THE WORDS OF WOMEN:
No one should trust the words of a girl or a married woman, for their hearts have been shaped on a turning wheel and they are inconstant by nature. |
REPUTATION:
Cattle die, kinsmen die, I myself shall die, but there is one thing which I know never dies: he reputation we leave behind at our death. |
