Nordmannia Feast, 12th May 2001, Alphington.

The Nordmannia event went down well with attendees. The weather was balmy for an Autumns day which made the combat at the vacant block all the nicer. We had close to twenty combatants on the field, from Vlachernai, Dubh Linn, Hodegon, Nordmannia, Islendiga, and Ravensgard. The highlight of the combat was a Tournament, the prize of which was a kiss from a fair Maiden (Reannin of Nordmannia). The Tournament was contested by many worth warriors but it came down to a contest between Nuff of Islendiga and Azaz the tall (Sven) of Vlachernai. Azaz was not merciful and ended up placing his lips on the maiden’s hand.

The feast was festive affair with wide range of dishes placed before the throng (about 60+ strong). Singing and dancing and even some wrestling from Nat and Azaz were the entertainments. While the game of Fox and Geese between Bjorn of Dubh Linn and Nat of Latrobe was most tormenting because of the multitude of failures shown by both opponents. The Nine Man Morris also got a good airing.

The feast was also notable for the fund raising raffle for the fire victims (the Victorian Re-enactment Society and the Co-Op) which raised about $460 to help with their huge losses (extant period items (tents, carriages, uniforms, etc.)). Quite a number of re-enactors donated goods to be raffled off, from arrows, leather, tablet woven braid, jewellery and even a wooden chest.

It should also be noted that Nat and Brice of La Trobe missed out on the combat, eventhough they start at Brice’s place not 50 metres from the site. According to Brice in their travels they even found a nude witan sewing circle in one of the halls they visited.

The end of the day was spent loosing Projectile combat arrows at Sven while he walked around the wall of the ringfort, later being joined by Jeremy and Nick Draper.

Sunday was spent doing Projectile Combat over the Ringfort. The repairs and additions to the Ringfort by the recent working bees made it a much more defensible position (as long as you kept the gate locked).

Thanks to those whom helped with the Ringfort working bees, Andrew Reader and Warwick Gill for the catering and the Ely family for use of the site.

Ringwood Highland Games 9/4/2000

Due to some confusion we only found out about this display the week before and the Islendiga feast on Saturday. This meant that the joint training on the Saturday had to be postponed. Luckily, there were enough people with free time on a Sunday to put on a reasonable show, with participants from Dubh Linn, Hodegon, Vlachernai, Frojel Gotlandica and even an independent.

Our encampment was set up on the far side of Jubilee Park but we still had a large number of patrons stop and have a look and a feel (“it’s (mail) so heavy!”). We put on two main combative displays with even some of the women folk haranguing their family members of taking part. Poor Mark had to slink from the field after an earful from Indunna (Jenny, Hodegon).

All in all, a lovely day well spent, maybe in May we can practice our Byzantine infantry square drill.

Medieval Fighting and Crafty Bastards Display

For the ABC’s Recovery Program, 2/4/2000, Queen’s Park, Geelong.

The Medieval Fighting and Crafty Bastards of Geelong was approached by the Recovery program (ABC TV) mainly because of their unusual name compared to the other Medieval re-enactment groups on the Australasian Re-enactment and Living History Organization (ARLHO) list.

The film crew got to the site early and filmed the tents being raised and armours being donned.

Along the banks of the Barwon River a path meanders through a grove of European deciduous trees which provided a great location to film an ‘ambush’ scene. Rose Kviz, in high Medieval costume accompanied by a retinue consisting of ladies in waiting, children and five guards (Ladge, Darren, Sven, Robert la Mal and Andrew Whiteford) were walking along this path enjoying the sunny autumn day. When from either flank a motley crew of Normans (from Nordmannia), Gotlandicans (from Frojel Gotlandica) and other mercenaries (various independents) burst forth from the surrounding undergrowth. The guards were slaughtered after putting up a gallant defence and the women and children captured.

After a water break some training was conducted showing how people are taught the basic skills. Then two sides formed up for a melee on the field between the tents. The film crew took close ups of our faces and then filmed a close angle shot of the two sides clashing.

At the picnic, Lee, the Recovery presenter, asked those assembled questions regarding historical re-enactment, including; authenticity, the history of re-enactment, and even if there were any disruptive or aloof elements among re-enactors.

Hopefully, any the good stuff won’t end up on the cutting room floor. The short story should be shown on the ABC in two to three weeks. Thanks to Ladge and Rose for inviting us to participate and providing a delicious picnic lunch. Nick Draper, David Grech and myself all had a good time.

Geelong Highland Games, 19th March 2000.

Queens Park in Geelon was overwhelmed by the sound of bagpipes and a dazzling array of tartan. The Dubh Linners had their Viking encampment set up by the tenth tee of the golf course. With a game of Kubb (Viking Skittles) set up out in front, this proved to be a hit with the children. The main display was a re-enactment of the "Battle of Bannockburn", with Sven playing the part of the hapless English commander. The small English force was, funnily enough, over-run by the kilt wearing spear waving Scots and Sven had to beat a hasty retreat, much to the delight of the partizan crowd.

Pop Festival (read "Rave") at Sokil, 13th March 2000.

According to Egfroth, this martial display was to be for a "Pop Festival" being held at the Ukrainian Scout Camp at Sokil. However, on arrival at the front gate (at the prescribed time), Bjarki and Sven were met by a very red eyed organiser called Dylan and it was plain to see that the event was not a Pop Festival.

Members from Dubh Linn, Hodegon, Vlachernai and even a ring-in from Frojel Gotlandica participated. The battlefield of the 1997 Conference had been turned  into a huge dance floor and as our intrepid re-enactors marched on with armour clanking and banners waving, it was an uncertain reception that awaited them.

They did the usual thing of single combat, mixed group combat and even a bit of training. All to the beat of loud funk music blaring from the speakers, while those on the dance floor gyrated and swayed. A number of people were curious, some took pictures and videos, some even took flies or provided contact details. After the display, members either went to the beach or had a picnic down by the dam.

Highpoint Shopping Centre Display, 11th March 2000.

The Purpose of the display was to promote a theatrical fencing school being opened by Robert Dde Bagliano. Along with Sven, there were members from Nordmannia and the Geelong Crafty Bastards. The re-enactors put on a martial disply, illustrating the history of sword play, which was then followed by a modern foil fencing competition.

Projectile Combat Workshop, 26th September 1999 - A Report.

Hi All,

Thanks to all those which aided and participated.

The workshop went well with the newbies cutting their teeth in a test of their nerve and skill.

The only problems occured due to ill fitting Projectile Combat helms.

I have been asked to run such events more often. So I will see what we can do.

I know Quarf has mentioned an event similar to the Alzinj Brotherhood format (Target archery first day, Projectile Combat the next, the person with the highest score in both disiplines wins). Or was it two days of Projectile combat?

Dubh Linn Garrison Feast, 31st July & 1st August 1999.

Hi All,

For those that could not make it to the NVG's Dubh Linn Garrison's (Geelong, Victoria) event this weekend past you missed out on a good feast and a great time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Dubh Linn Garrison for putting on the event, especially Lynne for the wonderful food and Russell for the use of the property and the motte and bailey castle.

Saturday's combat took place over and around the recently erected motte and bailey castle. I was impressed by the amount of work done on the fortification. The motte included a tower above the gate which was closed by a drawbridge (which when own crossed an extension of the moat. After a few battles over the castle we were allowed to be destructive on the bailey walls. Craig Sitch of the Antioch Garrison (Ballarat, Victoria) made the best impression of human battering ram.

It should be noted that a bit of confusion was instigated by the initial use of 'mock rocks' during the first two combats, such
projectiles are only for use during 'projectile combat'

On Sunday, a one sided affair of projectile combat took place with a number of brave combatants donning projectile combat helms and normal armour to be attacked by a line of archers and pole slingers. Luckily the combatants held the castle and had some protection against the incoming missiles. Fun was had by all. Later, numerous people had a go at using real rocks with the pole slings which produces encouraging noises when the rock hit the castle walls or great distance.

I have the photos and I hope to put them up on the web for all to see.

Russell later spoke to me about organising an archery day with projectile combat as the main focus. More information to follow.

Vlachernai Archery Tourney,  4th November 1998.

It was a mild evening at the start of Spring as a small but intrepid band of travellers made their way through the wild lands of Footscray to arrive finally at their destination, the Vlachernai Hall. There was raven-hared Jenny and tall Thorolf from the new Hodegon Garrison and the fair Annie from far Thessalonika.

They had come to chance their skills against the cream of The Vlachernai,in the inaugural Indoor Archery Tourney and a more diverse group of heroes has yet to be seen - Mighty Sven Shieldbiter, daunless Bjarki Littlebear, young Odd,the doughty David and myself, your humble scribe,Kveldulf.

After the welcoming ceremonies, there came the call," Archers,to the line" and the competiton began with fierce intent.Fortunes see-sawed as, utilising their impressive talents,Archers found their range and the scores mounted. [Although, some were there that took more time than others to finally attain this profiency]. Suffice to say, some interesting shots were made as the fortunes of each Archer ebbed and flowed.

The first competiton was a Target Shoot from 40,30,20 and 10 metres, with six arrows per round, the final results were:-
  1st. Sven  147 pts.
  2nd  Bjarki  127 pts.
  3rd David   96 pts.
  4th Kveldulf  93 pts.
 Equal 5th Thorolf   84 pts.
 Equal  5th Annie   84 pts.
  6th Odd   81 pts.
  7th Jenny   42pts.
Next  was the Wand Shoot, from 15 metres which, after a number of shoot-offs against David and Kveldulf, was won by Sven.
Then came the final competition,a form of Turkish Shoot, also from 15 metres, with Archers allowed only one arrow each and the final scores are as follows:-
  1st David  9 pts.
 Equal  2nd Sven  7 pts.
 Equal 2nd Jenny  7 pts.
  3rd  Annie  6 pts.
  4th Odd  5 pts.
  5th Thorolf  2 pts.
  6th  Kveldulf 0 pts. [a slight over-compensation error]
The competition was fierce yet fair and any disputes were rare but good -natured .Everyone had a grand time and the Tourney will be run again. The final intent being,to make it a regular monthly competition open to Archers from all the various garrisons or groups.Already, there have been expressions of interest by Archers, from the the far reaches of the Empire, who have heard of the legendary prowess of the original participants and wish to try their arm,in a test of skill, against the mighty talents of those first eight champions.
When the details have been finalised and the dates set, runners will be dispatched to spread the word across the far-flung Empire and Archers, one and all, will once again,be invited to take up their bows, look to their shafts, strap on their quivers and come again to Vlachernai Hall.

Yours,
in service to the Emperor.

Miklagardr’s Rusalia Event Report, 4th - 6th June 1998, Arcadia, NSW.

By Peter Beatson and Stephen Wyley.

By all accounts the weekend was successful, the weather gods were mostly kind and gave us a couple of dry days in the middle of two sodden weeks in Sydney. They must have been pleased with our offerings. The RUSALIA was a lot of fun.  The idea was to recreate the kind of peasant ceremonies that might have occurred in Medieval Russia, using some examples recorded in the 19th century, and church commentaries plus archaeological material from the period. About half the people there had the leather masks based on finds from 13th century Novgorod, mainly thanks to Ruth's business sense in making up a dozen to sell at market. There was plenty of noise with Sven as our skomori (musician) on Vlachernai's drum, plus lots of bells for everyone. I was MC, the volokh (pagan priest or sorceror) using my replica Oseberg whistle to get attention, with dancing rusalki (water sprites) Christobel and Ruth.  We crowned our 'king for a day' (Little) Pete Manning who was chaired around by my two burly assistants, Quarf and Craig. Calling on each 'household', the king demanded an offering in exchange for a drink from the sacred horn. The guests responded well, and a haul of goodies was collected and set before the idols of Svarog, Perun and Volos. Honourable mention to jester Graeme for his amusingly idiotic capering during tribute collection. Next was the dancing, with the wives competing against the maidens, and the lads against the husbands for the king's favour, as he scattered his seeds upon the victors. Finally came the climax, the sacrifice to the water spirits to ensure gentle rain for the sprouting grain, and mild weather for the harvest. The part we DIDN'T tell Pete about... Yes, Mr. 'pagan ritual' Frazer (writer of the 'Golden Bough') would have been proud as we ritually 'drowned' our king. Of course, lacking a handy river to toss him into, we made do with a drenching bucket of icy water. Pete took it in good spirit (what else can you do with Craig and Quarf on each arm?), especially once back in dry clothes. A couple of Christian refuseniks spectated but declined to participate- oddly, they were threatening to roast their OWN children by the end of the night.

The POTTERY was successful again, with about two dozen lamps and four pots going through the kiln pit. A few pieces developed cracks, probably due to being still a little damp due to the lousy weather before the event. The firing took about twenty hours from go to whoa, much shorter than last time as there was more pots and less fuel. Thanks to Craig 'Gentle Giant' Gascoigne for helping out at all stages. The lamps were filled with beef dripping and used at the feast that night to great effect. The pungent odour of burning fat soon impregnated everything in the marquee, and no doubt will continue to remind the departed guests about our fabbo weekend for a long time (a couple of washes at least).

My highlight of the weekend was being Bastardized, I am now an official Bastard (rank- Mean Little), presumably due to my annoying habit of running down and spearing hapless combat archers. Thanks GOOBs!

Well done everyone, another triumph.

Peter Beatson.

Supplemental Report.

Miklagardr’s Rusalia was a wonderful affair, it only rained at night, the food and entertainment were excellent. The event was well attended, with members from the following clubs attending; 1066, Ecce Normannia, Fire and Steel, New England Medieval and Artisans Society, Mountains Garrison and the Vlachernai Garrison. Quarf’s readings from the Tales of 1001 Arabian nights were very entertaining especially those regarding Goa and his wife, let alone the tale of Ali Barba and the fourty thieves.

The market was held early on Saturday with all types of goodies for sale, including; some new belt buckles by Peter Beatson ( with some from Novrogod), a range of metal work, costume, jewellery, game boards, knives and spear heads, and lots more.

Congratulations to the following place getters in the Archery Competition held at Miklagardr's Rusalia event;

The Vlachernai Archery Event (31 Jan - 1 Feb/98).

The Archery Event was full weekend of archery blessed with fine weather and lots of enthusiastic people. The archery field, targets, etc., were provided by the Kew City Bowmen (KCB) which we are most grateful for. Two other members of the KCB also took part using their modern equipment. Peter and Kevin had an enjoyable day even though not eligible for prizes in the competitions.

Congratulations to all the place getters (they will be receiving their certificates and prizes soon) and to all the participants.

The Projectile Combat.

A days fun and frolicking was had over and around the ringwork at the Ely property in Mernda on the Sunday. Thanks are extended to Robert and his family for allowing us to run all over the place yet again. Thank you to all those who participated and turned up to watch. We had attendees from the NVG (Antioch, Dubh Linn, Miklagardr, Thessalonika and Vlachernai), Nordmannai, the OEAC, the Order of St George and some independents. The boys from Islendiga were sorely missed.

Notable occurrences during the battles: the frontal assault on the gateway (there is no gate yet) was a real smash; no one inside noticed Thorkell hiding in the ditch; the archers bested the infantry; and in the field battle the side with the most mobile infantry came out on top. See photos. Loxsley was brave enough to don full kit and take his camera out onto the battle field and take photos of the goings on. Some of the photos have already found their way on to the Vlachernai web site for all to see.

There were a few problems with substandard armour and an overweight bow but these were sorted out. I’m looking forward to the next chance to loose arrows at soft yelping targets.

Special thanks to the following for all their hard work; Denise, Warwick, Fenris, Greg, Lillian, Christobel, Quarf, Peter, Kevin, Jenny, Hellen, Sean, Pauline, Gary.

Ninth Australasian Medieval Conference, Sokil 1997. by Stephen Wyley.

All in all a wonderful conference, the food was of high quality and plentiful, most of the activities went according to schedule, the injuries on and off the field were minor (Bjarki ended up with five stitches in his head after a tent pole fell during erection). Our encampment was the furthest from the marque but was one of the largest sites. The White Dragon did come in very handy. Angela’s Cafe was a life saver, how could we have survived without the Turkish delight and hot coffee. The mass melees were large but were dominated by the impregnables (check out Sven's HOLY shield). The NVG again dominated the Archery Tournament (John should wear his glasses more often and the rest of us should practice more often, right Quarf). The battering ram crew performed well and the fort fell within twenty minutes of engagement under a coordinated three prong attacked. Dubh Linn won second prize in the 'Gasmules' Best Encampment Competition. Other ‘Gasmules’ place getters were Peter Beatson who won first prize for Best Combatant Presentation and Christobel Ferguson who won first prize for Best Non-Combatant Presentation. The Keynote Speaker, Prof. Anne Gilmore-Bryson’s lecture of sex, etc. was quite interesting (where’s the vinegar and iron filings). The Projectile Combat was fought over the remains of the Fort. Participants consisted of mostly NVG and two from Islendiga. Rick FlemingStuart's crossbow was a real hit. Denise's only kill was a stomach shot on Quarf. The Bridge Battle was poorly contested because the likelihood of getting wet was close to 100%. John Sultana proved his efficiency with his spear then pushed poor little Melissa in the drink. I missed the Routier vs the I Condotierri battle but those who did see said it was a real hoot of a display. The Monday's combat against the Grey Co. was the most enjoyable and safe combat I and many others participated in all conference. The New Zealanders who also took part said they would call for the adoption of head blow combat in New Zealand. At the same time as the aforementioned combat there was the 'State of the Movement Meeting', there was a debate about period footwear and Nordmannia declined to run the next conference (such an event would even tax an old and strong organization). During the second demonstration of the Grey Co.’s trebuchet Russel Miners also gave lessons in the use of the polesling. I can see them being used in future Projectile combats. Lou, Denise and Sven all got to fire the Grey Co.'s trebuchet using live ammo. At the feast the night before Lillian from the Grey Co. tried to sell the trebuchet for $2000. However, I could not afford it and Wormtouge and Russel Miners were more interested in selling Lillian (the final price was $25 and two bushels of dates). Lillian was not impressed and vowed to fight on the NVG side in the battles the next day. The poor Routiers, after providing less alcohol as they did at the 1991 Conference they were reduced to selling their left over stock for cost price.

I believe thanks should be extended to the Organizing Committee and their many helpers for a good conference.

The Miklagarðr’s 10th Birthday Report, Labour Day 1997.

On the Labor Day long weekend (for some states) the Miklagarðr Garrison of the New Varangian Guard Inc. celebrated their 10th year of existence. The photographs from the past revealed sleeker versions of the current members getting up to all and sundry.

A tent city arose on the site in Arcadia, the profusion of bell tents overwhelmed the village green. Only two Viking tents could be seen, the rest had to camp with the non-period tent in the next field. The old gods were set up in the centre of the village green and overlooked the Holmgang field.

The results of the competitions are listed below. The combination of the tall and the wide overcame all comers in the Holmgang before the watchful eyes of the old gods (Perun has his eyes on you). The archery competition held few surprises (people need to practice more). The Coits were hotly contested by a large crowd but it was left to the two lucky ones to toss it out.

The oven was put to good use, baking or warming up food for the feasts and even baking fresh bread. Thanks to John for the new bread trough.

The Eastern feast on Saturday Night was scrummy and saw the antics of a juggler/magician, who not only kept the young ones amused but made us all apprehensive with his balancing act.

The Viking Feast was accompanied by the return of the dare dice game named “Darren’s Bum”. The notable occurrence which this correspondent saw was young Hogni of Rusland sip beer from Christobel’s belly button. From what was related to me later about the same game was that someone would not eat his peas.

The combat on Sunday was a fun filled affair with only the weight of some blows causing problems. The Battle fields consisted of the open field, the dyke, the woodland, the wall, and the road. During one of the ‘road’ battles Sven had to apologise for taking out members of his own side and then did a complete berserk and took out the rest of the opposing side.

The projectile combat consisted of mainly “Agincourt” runs which allowed the most people to participate. The ‘bunnies’ in armour soon worked out that it is better to approach archers covered with shields. The dancing made interesting targets, the whirling of the waltzers used their shields to great effect. Javelineers on the flanks took out the attacking infantry when the archers failed to. Quite a number of participants mentioned an interested in obtaining the appropriate gear. There is talk of a Projectile Combat event in the near future.

The New Varangian Guard Gathering, 5th & 6th October 1996.

Arcadia, New South Wales.

Reported by S.Wyley.

The event was organized by a coalition from the Mountains & Miklagardr garrisons. It was a wonderful event, two sumptuous feasts, live music, dancing, great food and even a changing mosaic display.

The carved (by Steven Baker) popinjay was attacked by the local swallows. Rowan of Rusland won the popinjay event.

The market was well appointed and attended, ah jewellery, ah the sabres, ah! even a self bow.

The Archery tournament was rained upon but the doughty archers struggled on. Ist was Sven, Roy Picton 2nd, Jim Dunn 3rd and Alex Besek 4th, a great event from the boys of Vlachernai.

On Monday, numerous people responded to the call to repel the invaders, with arrow, dart and javelin, this they did with a modicum of success. From all accounts many of those people are now contemplating taking up Projectile Combat.

Congratulations to all the people involved with running the event, it was great, fulfilling and fun.

The September Archery Event 7&8th/9/96 by Sven Skildbiter.

Through adversity we overcame the unfriendly elements at Mernda to at least hold the Roving field, Clout and the flight shoots. Those brave souls who took part in that part of the event should receive commendations for action in hostile conditions. Next year it has been suggested to hold the event in October instead.

Grateful thanks are extended to: the Ely Family for allowing us to use the site at Mernda; Peta, Gaye and Denise for preparing the sumptuous feast; Bjarki, Corey, Thorgrim and Matthew for preparing the feasting hall; Mick for arranging for the marques; Alex, Quarf and Bjarki for assisting with the running of the archery competitions; Roy, Quarf and Naomi for travelling so far; Bjarki for making new trestles; all the participants in the archery contests and finally to all those who helped to make the event a success.

My only criticism was that two senior members which participated in Sunday’s archery contests set a very bad example to all the new and potential members by not wearing period costume. In future no person will be able to compete unless in costume.

Congratulations to all the placegetters and to all those whom participated. The placegetters prize certificates are in the pipeline.

Vlachernai’s 15th Birthday Archery Tournament, St.Andrews, 8th June 1996.

The archery tournament was a well attended activity of the weekend with nineteen archers contesting the tournament. It seems having the indoor archery range at the hall has paid off in the skill shown and the number of archers from Vlachernai participating.

Note: The face was a full FITA 1-10 face. It was bought to the Marshals attention that a intermediate class was needed for those who have won places in Novice competition but do not feel confident in the Experienced class, this will be addressed at the next major competition.

Marshals: John Sultana and Stephen Wyley.
Recorder: Kathryn Holder.

A suggestion for the difference between the classes are as follows:

Novice, Those archers which have never won a place in a ‘novice’ or any other archer competition;
Intermediate, Those archers which have won a place in a ‘novice’ competition but are not of a standard for an ‘experienced archer’ or of a skill beyond the level of a novice archer;
Experienced, Those archer which have won a place in previous archery competition or are of a skill level beyond the level of a ‘intermediate archer’.

Comments on the above suggested classes for archers in competition should be directed to Stephen Wyley.

The November Archery Event.

On the 25th and 26th of November an ‘Archery Event’ was held at the Ely’s Mernda property. The weather was mostly fine but with a high pollen count which adversely effected quite a number of people.
During Saturday a number of rounds were shot (see result tables below). Congratulations to all the participants. Certificates will be issued to the place winners. It was good to see so many people willing to take part in such an event. It will be considered to hold the ‘Archery Event’ as an annual event. What do people think of that idea ?
Saturday night’s Feast menu was based on the scenes from the ‘Bayeux Tapestry’ and  was catered superbly by the catering firm ‘Entertaining Past Times’ (Julie Heron & Craig Sitch).
Sunday saw the ‘Target Shooting Workshop’, which proved to be successful in helping many people improve their archery technique especially their loose (eg. even Thorgrim without his contacts shot better with a proper release). Thanks to Sven and Quarf for their expert tuition.
The ‘Projectile combat’ battles consisted of two forces fighting over ‘Sigurdsted’ (the ringwork). The ‘Projectile Combat’ battles clearly showed the need for a good mix of archers and infantry in any force. The force lacking in infantry invariably lost when rushed by shielded infantry with archer support.
[Suggested reactions to arrow hits: one arrow in the leg below the hip, hobble convincingly; two arrows in the leg below the hip, kneel down; shot twice in each leg, fall over, no locomotion possible; hip shot, incapacitation; posterior (bum) shot incapacitation and embarrassment].
After lunch, a force consisting only of archers and the another force containing only of infantry in projectile combat armour fought more battles of over the ringwork. In most cases when the infantry used a shield wall they were successful but when the forces split up they were more effected by flanking fire. The ditch did slow them down a bit but without infantry support the defence was doomed. In one of the final scenarios the archers attacked the ringwork held by the infantry. With no opposition fire or sallying force the infantry in the ringwork were at a great disadvantage. As the archers advanced in good order the number of simulated wounds increased until the only survivor, Ibn Rashid, surrendered.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable weekend. Thank to all those that helped prepare and run the event, especially; Denise, Quarf, Ruth, Roy, Craig, Julie, Ben, Rhonda, Robert, Sarah, Tree, Stuart and Ibn Rashid.
