VSTSA Meeting October 3
October 3 will be the first VSTSA business meeting of the year, and the agenda is full.  Plan to be there!  We will be voting on some important issues and appointing committees for the year ahead.

Leadership positions needing to be filled include:

First Year Rep
UBC Student Council Rep
Housing Reps
Auxiliary Tea Planning Committee (see article on last page)

Other issues that will be brought forward will be he grading policy and the VSTSA budget for the coming year.

The VSTSA executive committee will be meeting on the last Thursday of each month.  Please speak to an officer with any student concerns you have, or visit the VSTSA office and list any items you would like to see considered in the Agenda binder.
Health and Dental Plan
The opt out deadline was September 24, and many VST students successfully completed the process!

However, some students did not realize that they were considered full time until they received their tuition statements that were mailed out on September 13.  For students in this category, a special one-time extension for opting out has been granted by Studentcare Networks.  If you are one of these students previously unaware of full time status, you now have until October 1 to opt out.
You must follow the same opt out procedure, bringing proof of other extended coverage to the Health and Dental Plan office in the SUB.

The Health & Dental Plan is an extended care plan mandatory for all full-time students.  When you have opted out at the SUB, leave a copy  your Opt-Out slip in the VSTSA mailbox.

Please remember that not paying the fee does not equal having opted out. This is a group plan and all eligible students are covered by the Plan unless they have opted  out.  If you are a full time student with another extended care plan and have not opted out, then you will be covered by the plan and the fee will be outstanding and you will be billed.

British Columbia’s MSP program is not  an extended care plan

Note also that all students who are taking 60% or more of a full course load are considered full time by VST.
Bursary Available
If you are having difficulty making ends meet, you may qualify for a bursary to reimburse you for all or part of your $180 health and dental plan premium.

Applications for the bursary are located online at
www.gss.ubc.ca/health/application.html.

The deadline for applications is
October 15.

Don’t delay!  Funds are awarded until the supply of money is exhausted.
Calling Plan Now Available To Students
Clear Channel is a new calling plan available through the AMS with low rates for international calls.  (Calls within Canada and to the USA are five cents a minute.) A chart on the VSTSA bulletin board lists the rates to various countries.

The rates can be accessed from any location, by land phone or cell phone using and access number and a PIN (identity) code.

Billing for the plan is by credit card or by automatic payment from a checking account.

Applications are located on the VSTSA bulletin board and can either be faxed to Clear Channel or dropped off at the AMS Administration office on the upper floor of the SUB.
VSTSA Gets a New Office!
VSTSA now has a place to call home!  A new office for the student society will be located in Room 198.

The new office will provide work space for the officers, storage for files, and a place to speak with a VSTSA representative about concerns...or just a place to stop for a friendly chat and a piece of candy.  The pastoral care binder will also be kept there (see related article on page 3).

VSTSA thanks  Principal Ken Macqueen and Academic Dean Wendy Fletcher-Marsh for their  efforts to find a home for VSTSA.
