Using the Health & Dental Plan
Here are some important reminders about  the health and dental plan:

Detach the card located on the back of the plan  handbook and carry it with you.  The card contains plan numbers you will need. Remember to add your student ID number.

> Your coverage begins September 1, 2002 and ends August 31, 2003.

?> During the Blackout Period in September and October, when Studentcare Networks is still in the process of receiving enrollment lists from universities throughout Canada, you must pay any costs up front and file a claim to be reimbursed.

> Claim forms are located at the Health & Dental Plan office in the SUB. You can also download claim forms from www.studentcare.net

>? The website also contains a searchable data base if you need to check whether a certain medication is covered, especially new or experimental drugs.

> Assistance with questions is available by phoning toll-free 877-795-4421.

> Keep a copy of the green plan handbook around.  Most of your questions can be answered inside.
VST's New ID Cards -- What's That About?
After years of discussion, student ID cards became a reality this Fall.

The cards feature the new student number, which is essential for accessing Health & Dental plan benefits.  Additionally, the card is vital to international students who are often  asked at borders to show a photo ID that proves their enrollment in school.

Plans for the future of the cards include a no-cost sticker that will update your card each year, so that you can reuse the same card and the possibility of student discounts that might be associated with the card.

Kudos to Kelly Duncan of Development her hard work behind the scenes in producing the cards.  Thank you, Kelly!
I
f you still need a photo on your card, all you need to do is drop in to Artona Studios at 353 West 7th Avenue and get your picture taken.  No appointment is necessary. If you do not want to have your photo on the card, your card will still be valid for purposes that require confirmation of your student number.

If you have any problems or questions concerning your ID card, please contact Kelly Duncan at  (604) 822-9814 or by email at

The Pastoral Role of VSTSA
The new executive team of VSTSA seeks to strengthen the fabric of the student community.   A number of avenues have been explored.  First, we have purchased a supply of cards and a binder for listing pastoral care needs.  Throughout the year, as you become aware of the needs of fellow students, the faculty and staff, please let the VSTSA executives know by speaking directly with one of them, or by entering a card request with a brief description in the Pastoral Care binder in the VSTSA office, Room 194.  Cards will be mailed on behalf of the student body for illness, personal crisis, death of a loved one, celebrations, retirements and similar occurrences. Normally, birthday cards will not be sent. A token gift on behalf of the student body will be given upon the occasion of births and weddings among the student population.  Please let us know about these needs, so that we can serve in this way.

Other ways that VSTSA can be effective in strengthening the fabric of student life is to act as advocate for student concerns.  To that end, we will need individuals willing to volunteer to serve on committees, act as representatives to other committees, and aid in bringing to light the problems that students face and seeking resolution. Several students are now acting in roles of advocacy or have expressed interest in serving in these roles.  Please contact us if you would like to be a part of making a difference at VST
Playground Improvements
The playground behind the Iona Building is sporting a fresh new look, thanks to a cooperative effort between the Dean’s Office and VSTSA.   Historically, the playground is the responsibility of the student association and not the school.  However, this year, school funds were appropriated for some of the equipment, with VSTSA supplying the balance of funds.

A volunteer is needed to complete a few minor repairs to the slide.  The job would require a few tools and a trip to the lumber store.  VSTSA would reimburse  the cost of materials.  Please contact VSTSA if you can help.

Additionally, VSTSA purchased a baby swing this summer.  Because there is a weight limit on the swing, we have left it at the Front Desk for sign out.  However, we would like a parent volunteer to take charge of the swing so that it can be available to our children, but not left out so that it does not get broken or misused so that a child is injured.  Please contact a VSTSA executive if you would like to help out.
