More Contest & Incentive Ideas from the Vermont TOPS Tidbits Archives |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Patchworks of Success- The goal is for each member to have a patchwork pillow at the end of the six week contest. Each member gets to pick the background color for their pillow, then earns the colored squares for the front. Each member weighing in with a loss chooses a fabric square. The idea is to encourage attendance and weight loss, as you can only earn a square if you weigh in with a loss. Members may earn a total of six squares. When the contest is finished the pillows are sewn together and stuffed.
The Charley Horse Contest- Each week, one person's name is drawn. If that member has exercised during the week, they receive free dues for the following week.
Helping Hand Contest- Give each member a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 paper and ask them to draw their hand on it. Be sure they write their name on the paper so everyone knows who it belongs to. Each person must give their hand to another member to symbolize offering them a helping hand. The one who receives the hand must then weigh in with a loss for two consecutive weeks if they are a TOPS. If a KOPS, the person must weigh in at or below goal, or have a loss if above goal, for two consecutive weeks. Once two consecutive losses are recorded, the person signs their name on one finger and returns the hand to its owner, who passes it on to another member. The winner is the first person to have all five fingers of their hand signed.
Weekly Best Loser Contest- Purchase a gift certificate or simply put cash in an envelope, then seal it. Be sure to use a security envelope so no one can see through it and know what is inside. Each week, the weekly best loser writes his or her name on the outside of the envelope. The first person to have their name on the envelope three times wins what is inside.
TOPS Bucks- Use your creativity to make some TOPS Bucks- similar to Monopoly money. Decide the number of weeks you wish to run the contest. Each week members have an opportunity to earn TOPS Bucks. At the end of the contest, ask members to bring in items for an auction. Members use the TOPS Bucks they have earned to purchase the items being auctioned. For TOPS members, each pound lost earns one TOPS Buck. For KOPS, being in leeway earns one TOPS Buck, being at or below goal earns two TOPS Bucks. All members earn one TOPS Buck for bringing in a completed food diary, one for exercising 3 days per week for at least 20 minutes per day, and one for bringing in a healthy recipe. A member who brings a guest to the meeting earns 3 TOPS Bucks. The guest must be a potential TOPS member, not just a friend or family member they bring in order to collect the bucks. A member who presents a program earns 5 TOPS Bucks.
Small Changes- This contest encourages members to make small changes that will add up to big results over time. Each person needs to choose two small changes they want to make. Some examples might be to eat 2 servings of vegetables a day, or to drink 6 glasses of water a day, or to exercise 30 minutes per day. The small changes need to be specific, not simply to exercise more or drink more water, and should be something the person feels they need to work on. Give each member a blank calendar page. At the top of the page, each person writes their two specific small changes. Points are earned each day for making the small changes. Making one change earns one point and making both of them earns 3 points for the day. At the end of the month the member with the most points wins a small prize. They say it takes 21 days to make a new habit, so if you can manage to make the changes every day for the month, they should become a new habit that you will continue beyond the contest period.
Reach for the Golden Star- This contest is a very simple one. Each member is given a sheet with 10 stars, the last one being gold. Each week the member has a loss or stays the same, they get to mark off a star. They earn a charm when they reach the golden star. KOPS rules could be to mark off a star each time they weigh in at or below goal (as long as they are not so far below they are out of leeway).
TOPS Afghan of Warmth & Unity Contest- Each member who wishes to participate in the contest must pay $2.00. They then choose a color of yarn that will represent their weight loss in the afghan. They also choose a number from 1 to 8. This number represents the pattern of the squares they will earn. The member chooses the number without knowing what the pattern will look like. Each week when the members weigh in, TOPS earn a square for a loss, regardless of the amount lost. KOPS earn a square by being at or below goal. At the end of the contest, the member with the most squares will win the afghan. In the case of a tie, the afghan will go to the person who has lost the most weight during the contest.
Monthly Guide- Each member is given a calendar that has things to do for each day of the month. Some are food choices; others are things to make you feel good. Each day that you do what it tells you to do, you put a star on that day. The person who has the most stars at the end of the month is the winner and should receive a prize.
Ladybug Contest- Each person starts with a ladybug with 8 spots, which are not colored in. You can either put all the lady bugs on a poster board, or give each person a sheet of paper with a ladybug drawn on it. Each week, members get to color in one spot if they have exercised at least 30 minutes on at least 4 days. They get to color in another spot if they have had a loss (for TOPS members) or are at or below goal (for KOPS members). Prizes should be given to those with the most spots colored in at the end of four weeks.
Ten Thin Dimes- Each person brings in 10 dimes in a jar or a zip-lock bag. Each week, after weighing in, TOPS members with a loss or KOPS at or below goal (but in leeway) take one of their dimes out. For a gain or a KOPS out of leeway, you must add a dime. KOPS above goal but in leeway or TOPS who turtle do nothing. The first person to remove all of his or her dimes wins everyone else's remaining dimes. In the case of a tie, all remaining dimes are divided among the winners.
