More Team Contests from the Vermont TOPS Tidbits Archives
Survivor Contest- This contest is based on the popular television show Survivor. Divide the chapter into two teams. Each team should choose a team leader. Decide how many weeks you want the contest to run. Points are earned by the teams each week. The team with the most points each week gets to vote off one member of the opposing team. However, if the person who gets voted off weighs in with a loss the following week, he or she is allowed to remain on the team. Weekly points are earned as follows:
For weight loss- The team gets one point for each pound lost by team members. This is based on the net loss of all team members weighing in. If the team has a net gain, they must subtract a point for each pound gained. If the team has a net loss of five pounds or more, they earn an additional 5 points. For exercise- The team gets one point for every hour of exercise reported by team members. Mini-challenges- Assign a different mini challenge each week. The team earns one point for each member who meets the challenge. Examples might be keeping a food diary, drinking water, eating at least 2 vegetables a day, etc. At the end of the contest, the team with the most points overall wins, and each team member gets a prize. |

Thermometer Contest- Divide the chapter into teams. Each team has a thermometer with 1/2- pound markings. After all the members have weighed in, each team figures their net loss (or gain). The "mercury" in the team's thermometer is moved up (or down in the case of a net gain) the appropriate number of half pounds. The first team to reach a net loss of 24 pounds wins a prize.

Gardening (Team Contest)- Divide the chapter into teams. If you have KOPS members, you might make them your team captains (the master gardeners). You can choose either a flower garden or a vegetable garden. The flowers or vegetables can either be drawn or you might want to purchase stickers. For TOPS, each loss earns a flower (or vegetable) for your team's garden. For a gain, you must put a weed in your team's garden. For a turtle, do nothing. For KOPS, weighing in at or below goal earns a flower (or vegetable) for your team's garden. If you are out of leeway, you must put a weed in your garden. If you are above goal, but in leeway, do nothing. To determine the winning team, count the number of flowers (or vegetables), then deduct the number of weeds. The one with the most is the winning team. Give a small prize to each person on the winning team. This could also be done as an individual contest.
Trip to the Beach- Find some stickers or cutouts (five or six different ones) of beach items, like a beach ball, umbrella, sunglasses, beach chair, flip flops, beach bag, beach towel, etc. Give each person an envelope to collect their beach items. To participate, each person should bring in one item you might take to the beach. Each week, a TOPS with a loss or a turtle, or a KOPS in leeway, earns one beach item sticker or cutout. The first person to earn one of each of the stickers wins the real beach items. If there is a tie, the items are divided between the winners.
Falling Leaves- Plan on running the contest for four weeks. Divide your chapter members into groups of two. Each pair should have a tree with 40 colored leaves on it and a basket under the tree to collect the fallen leaves. These can be made with construction paper and tape or velcro. Each week, each member of the team gets to take a leaf off the tree and place it in the basket for these accomplishments:
1 for weighing in (loss, gain, or turtle) 1 for bringing in a food diary 1 for exercising at least 60 minutes during the week 1 for a loss (or KOPS at or below goal) 1 for contacting their buddy by phone or email Each week, the pair can remove up to 10 leaves from their tree. When the contest ends, the pair who has the most leaves in their basket wins. In the case of a tie, figure out the net loss for each pair and the one with the best loss wins. |
