HUNTERS AND GATHERERS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
HOME | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Early man hunted and gathered food. Neanderthals were hunters and gatherers that hunted at close range. They also hunted by herding up animals and drove them off a cliff. Neanderthals hunted cattle and rarely fished. Homo sapiens were hunters/gatherers and scavengers. Hunters means a person who hunts game or food. Gatherers are people who harvest plants and wild food. In the Paleolithic times the Old Stone Age, primitive man had no surplus. People lived as nomads and there were wandering hunters and gatherers. Also there were no permanent settlements around 3.5 million years ago. During the Middle Paleolithic period, Neanderthals hunted prehistoric animals between 100,000 and 400,000 years ago. In the Upper Paleolithic Period, Homo sapiens began public hunting and fishing between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. Homo sapiens began farming around 5,000 years ago. Homo sapiens could now settle down and raised crops. They also started to domesticate animals. When farming and people settling began, civilizations were gradually building. There are still hunters/gatherers, Paleolithic people, Mesopotamia gathered plants. We gather and hunt today, we gather fruits and vegitables. Also we hunt animals for meat. There is believed to have been competition between these species in ancient Europe, causing the extinction of the Neanderthal people. |
