There are two types of tundra in the world, arctic and alpine. The Arctic tundra is by the north pole. The alpine tundra is at the top of tall, cold mountains There are different species of animals in the Arctic tundra. The animals include musk ox, caribou, reindeer, arctic hare, snowshoe rabbit, wolf, arctic fox, and snowy owl. In the Arctic tundra, invertebrate life is scarce. Animals in the Alpine tundra include mountain goats, big horned sheep, pica, marmot, and ptarmigan. Butterflies, grasshoppers, and beetles are abundant, but flies are scarce. In the Arctic tundra, plant species are few and growth is low. Typical Arctic vegetation consists of cotton grass, sedge grass, dwarf health, moss, and lichen. Alpine plant communities contain mat making and cushion forming plants. These plants are rare in the arctic. |
