An Ice Age is a period of long-term downturn in the temperature of the Earth's climate, resulting in the Earth becoming a giant snowball. There have been four major Ice Ages in the past. The first and harshest dated back from 800-600 million years ago;then 460-430 million yeats ago; and 350-250 million years ago, and the last Ice Age dated back 10,000 years ago. Ice Ages occur when four factors combine: atmospheric composition, changes in the Earths orbit, arrangment of the continents, and last but not least reduction of Co2 in the atmosphere. The Ice Ages ended because of the greenhouse effect. Another is predicted when the temperature drops and when the interglacial period. An interglacial period is in between glacial periods. Interglacial periods last about 50,000 years. |
