Emperor Penguins are the largest of the 17 penguins and can grow up to 1.15m tall and can weigh up to 40 kg! These penguins are near the top of the Southern's Ocean's food chain. They eat fish, squid, and krill. The emporors are the strongest of divers. They can dive down 565m and can stay in the cold Antarctic sea for 22 minutes. Even though they aren't very good on walking on land, when on sea their body gives them great speed.
Another interesting fact is that these penguins can survive the Antarctic winter and are capable of breeding during the worst weather conditions. ?The emperor has excellent insulation in the form of layers of feathers. Another adaptation against the cold winds are when the penguins stay huddled up. This saves lots of body heat from the cold winds.
While other penguins mate in the summer the emperor penguins mate during the winter months. When these penguins are courting they display orange ear patches to attract females. The female will have the egg around June then go into the cold sea and fatten up for at least nine weeks. Meanwhile, the male penguins are trying to keep the eggs warm by putting the egg between the legs, brooding, and huddling together. When the egg nearly hatches, the female returns to take care of the chick. Then the male goes of to eat. After being separated they finally join together to take care of their chick.
