Frame Sliders - Frame sliders are great for saving the plastic and engine covers in a crash. Most times these are easy to install. There those certain occasions when you have to drill! The process: You will need some certain tools and materials. The materials needed are masking tape and playdough. The tools needed are drill, about 1/8" bit, hole saw (around 2"), something to mount the fairing securly so it can be drilled safely. You will start out by removing the middle section cowling from the bike. Your engine will now be exposed and the engine mounts are visable. Loosen the engine mount bolt partially (it will stick out only 1/2") that is inline with where the slider is going to be placed. Go back to your cowling. You are going to use the play dough and place it in the area you think the slider will be (as close to the point where the engine mount bolt will line up). When you have the play dough placed, start putting your cowling back on the bike. (Place the screws into the cowling mounts as you would for a reinstallation, just don't competley tighten them).. Just make sure it is secure and lined up where it is going to be mounted. When you have the cowling in place, go ahead and give the cowling a gentle push into the engine. Remove the cowling from the bike. You will see a shape of the engine mount bolt in the playdough. Find the center of the bolt imprint and mark it. Now you will tape the painted side. Using several strips of masking tape, cover the area the hole saw will cut. Now, time for drilling!!! Using a drill bit that will produce a good guide hole for the hole saw bit, begin drillinto the the spot that you marked on the playdough side. (Be sure you find a good spot to mount the cowling) After you have the guide hole drilled, turn the cowling over and begin using the hole saw. When the circular bit to the hole saw begins to cut, be sure you have a firm yet gentle push onto the drill. Just keep the drill steady and smooth with the power at a medium speed. After the hole has been made you can smooth out the rough parts by sanding the inside of the hole. After the cutting is done, go ahead and mount your frame slider in place. Your sliders should come with a new engine mount bolt and instructions on how to mount the slider. (Be shure to tighten to the specified tourgue) Now you can mount the cowling with the slider in place. |
CONGRATULATIONS You have frame sliders! |
