What is the Wailuku Hongwanji Mission?
It is one of 36 temple owned by statewide organizations known as Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.’ It was established by Shin buddhist forbearers in 1898 at the corner of Wells and Market Streets. In 1945, the temple was relocated to its present site.

What are the purposes of the temple?
•To provide a place for Shin Buddhists to gather and worship Amida Buddha.
•To learn and practice Shin Buddhist teachings.
•To improve the general welfare of temple members and community.

Who can become a member?
Anyone who supports the purposes of the temple and will abide by its constitution and by-laws.

How can I become an Official Member?
Your commitment to join the Wailuku Hongwanji Mission as an official member is solicited. As an official member, you can help to direct its programs, plans, and policies.

How is the temple governed?
Gojikai - contribute membership dues: the temple’s voting membership.
Kyodan - the temple’s entire membership
Board of Directors - elected by Gojikai members to operate the temple.

Members are encouraged to:
•Deepen his/her understanding of Shin Buddhism
•Support Temple memberships goals and objectives

•Help and support the maintenance of the temple and membership projects

How are membership dues spent?
The statewide operation receives $75 of each member’s annual dues. The amount remaining is used for the operation of Wailuku Hongwanji.
