Europe - Athens, Greece

Thursday, July 28

The ferry left in the evening and we found an almost empty salon to unpack our sleeping bags and make ourselves comfortable. Suddenly we were surrounded by a group of Italians (they were only four but they were very persuasive) that tried to make us move out of there with the words: "We are Italians, We have to sleep here..". What can you say to that strong argument. We moved to avoid a quarrel, there were plenty of room on the ship but their words stayed in our minds for the rest of the trip. Whenever something was not going our way we had an argument ready: "We are Danish, we have to.." whatever.

The Athens group in the twilight

Friday, July 29

At Pátrai we had a break for an hour before the morning-train to Athens was leaving. Our camp-friends was leaving for a trip round Peloponnesus so we said good-bye. We bought some cookies and food for the train and took off. The last part of the trip into Athens we passed the magnificent corinth-channel, dug more than a century ago. We were accompanied by a young local girl (around the age of 25) and she also enjoyed our cookies; The box of chocolate-cookies was flying around the compartment between us like a volley-ball and suddenly one end of the box broke, the remaining cookies went ballistic and was all over her. We were quite embarrassed and cleaned up the mess. There were crumbs all over her. We were quite ashamed, but what can you do or say (NO, not the "We are Danish.." part). We offered her a cookie but I guess she had enough.

The other Girl

At the train we met the Corfu-girls again and teamed up with them once more in Athens getting a room for five persons. We planned to have one night in the Greek capital before sailing for Rhodes. After leaving our stuff in the hotel we walked for Acropolis in the afternoon heat.
