LOST DUTCHMAN State Park

When someone first suggested going for a hike at Lost Dutchman State Park, our founders shook their heads in disbelief.

"Too close to town!"; they cried. "Way too many people - like an anthill, it is."; they mumbled.
"Not a shady spot on that mountain."; they lamented.
"The trails are what?... maybe a mile long?..."; they snickered.
"For wussies and tourists."; they scoffed.
"Rather go eat a steak somewhere..."; Karinn muttered.

As it happened, they went anyway - and immediately fell in love with this 'gateway' to the Superstition Wilderness!

Although most of the trails are a bit short for hardcore mountaineering types, we've remedied that by hiking them all when we go... unless we're there to do "The Draw"...
The Siphon Draw Trail goes up up up the right side of Lost Dutchman State Park and disappears into a beautiful pseudo-slotcanyon known as 'The Basin'. Although the official trail ends there, a well marked and oft traveled path leads to the Flatiron, the ridge trails, and the summit of Superstition Mountain. Only 2.5 miles to the top, most of the way past the Basin involves light scrambling and an incessant search for 'the white dots' (which mark the route). Every time we've hiked here, we have seen many many many many people... and they all looked younger, healthier, and happier than us.... which gave us a bit of a complex...

Even so, it's an 'off day' if you're out there and don't see someone wearing a Wander Women logo!
