PERALTA Trailhead | ||||||||||||||||||||

We Wander Women have coughed up the use fee at the Peralta Trailhead so many times, we're sure we've paid for one of their bathrooms by now... and probably a road grading too. We have written the Forest Service about this and expect to have our very own parking space there soon - with a sign reading: "Wander Women Only" in nice colorful lettering with our logo... and maybe a smiley face on it too. We'd also like a comemorative plaque at the outhouse. |

Terrapin trail, Superstition Wilderness, AZ | ||||||||||||||||||||
Taking the Peralta Trail to Freemont Saddle is a wonderful 1/2 day outing and a decent workout resulting in "the best view of Weaver's Needle on this side of the Superstitions." Although this trail is often crowded - and very exposed for most of its length, late afternoon visits are very pleasant during the cooler months. Peralta goes on from the saddle to meet Dutchman four miles later. There, many other trails join in the fray and route options are near infinite. Since we heard the Bluff Springs Trail got far less use because of its immediate steep grade and very 'sunny disposition', we decided to check it out - and hook up with the Terrapin trail about two miles in. From there, we'd go north to Weaver's Needle, take the 'crosscut' on the south side of the base, and return via Peralta. The first time, we got horribly off route and ended up on something not very trail-like at all. We did find our way eventually, (more thanks to the visibility of Weaver's Needle than our actual routefinding skills...) but we were pretty roughed up by the time we got to the car - and the trip had taken almost 9 hours instead of the anticipated 5. There was only one shady spot on this route - and our dog hogged every last inch of it. |
