Erin's Corfu Journals 5-1-02 Our second morning in Corfu was another bright sunny day, which we started off with breakfast cooked up in the dining room, then went to find out about renting some scooters for the day to explore the island. There was a place that rented scooters just up the driveway from the Pink Palace, but he'd had too many 2-person renters that morning and was out of helmets. He didn't think this was a problem, but as a non-experienced scooter rider, I was insistent on having one, especially after having seen the way the island drivers were and hearing from the Pink Palace front desk that they no longer rented out scooters due to too many accidents (at least 1 a day!). So we changed our minds and rented a car instead, which worked out just fine. We drove up the coast a bit to a small town called Pelekas, a quaint town in the hills with tiny streets and lots of flowers. We wound our way down to Glifada beach where we watched the waves from some rocks and admired the perfect, clear blue water. Then we headed north to Paleokastritsa, which offers some of the best views on Corfu. We got some wonderful photos there, and then more from Lakones, a mountainous town that looks back down on the bay at Paleokastritsa. There we stopped for lunch, perched on the side of a cliff, and joined another couple from the Pink Palace who'd been on the same route as we were. After that we both ended up driving to the ancient hillside castle, Angelokastro, which offered huge panoramic views of the coast after a short 400+ step climb (I say short with lots of sarcasm - those steps were ankle-breakers from hell!). We got some great pictures, and thanks to our friends were even in a couple, then decided to head back as it was getting late. We returned the car after briefly getting lost with all the different town names on our maps being in several languages on the sparse street signs. We made it in for dinner and joined Angie & Corella again, who'd slept late and spent another day at the beach. We hung out for a little while after dinner, but I was tired and went up to work on journals around 10pm, while Glenn stayed on to chat until about midnight. |

The ankle-breaker steps up to the castle were sure pretty though! |
