Erin's Athens Journals 5-6-02 Monday was a better morning, as the mosquitos stayed off me all night. I'd sensibly applied lots of bug repellant right before bedtime, and it seemed to work (although Glenn also stayed well clear of me!). So fully rested, we got up and packed our stuff to leave downstairs while we waited for our 8pm ferry out to Crete. This was Glenn's 40th birthday as well (for those of you who could never get it out of him), so I kept bringing it up all day that he was now older & wiser, or that we should call his parents and thank them for having him because I'm so glad he was born, etc. He would rather have pretended that birthdays don't exist, so I made sure he caught plenty of hell to make up for all the friends & family who couldn't be there to do it for him! We swung by the travel agency we'd used to set up our island trips, so we could get our ferry tickets, etc., but Mark was swamped, so we had breakfast first (around 11am now - so nice to be on vacation time zone!). After returning for our itinerary and tickets, we headed over to an internet spot to check emails and do a couple more photo pages for our site. We are so far behind now that people are starting to ask us where we are! After a couple of hours there and a couple of hours in the park people watching, we went back to the hotel to type journals and played a little bit of darts with the nice couple running the place. Then we went back to the street where we'd found dinner the night before and picked a different restaurant for an early meal. The diet in Greece has a lot more meat to it, which has been a welcome change from the pasta/pizza diet of Italy! Around 7pm we grabbed our bags from the hotel and headed for the subway to get to the port. These bags get heavier every time we pick them up, so it was a long walk, and the subway was packed, so we stood the whole time with them. When we reached Pireas (the port) and found our boat, I was very happy to put the luggage down! The boat went over night to Crete and wasn't too crowded, so we ended up sleeping in shifts on one of the couches in the lounge. Not a very restful night, but adequate. |
