Florence's food market is still one of our favorite places for lunch |
Erin's Cinque Terre Journals 5-22-02 to 5-23-02 Our days in Florence qualify as working days. No really, we did a lot of work those two days! Our main goals here were to check for our mail in Bologna for the last time, and to get some serious updating done on our website. And we were successful for the most part on both goals. Wednesday we got up and headed over to the internet spot around 9am. Glenn stayed for a little while to help upload photos and journals, then took off for the train station around 11am to catch a ride to Bologna. I stayed at the cafe from 9:30am straight through to almost 7:30pm, just resizing photos, uploading them to our site, and putting up main pages for the several cities we'd seen since our last updates. Glenn got back around 5pm and let me know he was back, then took off again to do laundry. He is so good!!! Anyway, after a long but productive day, we went over to my favorite European Chinese food place, grabbed some yummies, and took them back to the hotel room for a relaxing evening in. I read my book - I had gotten into one of the trades I'd made with Dave & Marile, and was burning through it - until pretty late, then tried to sleep. I'd noticed the night before that it was rather loud outside our window, which overlooks the street. This night was even more so, as there was a pouring rain storm around midnight, then a whole group of drunk guys serenading themselves as they slowly staggered by at around 3:30am, then the street cleaners with engines that sounded like rockets at around 5am. No, not complaining, just explaining why I slept in when the relative quiet of a normal day started up around 7am!!! Originally we'd planned to go to Cinque Terre on Thursday, but with the successes we'd had on our website the day before, Glenn and I decided it was worth another push to get even more caught up, and spent another day in Florence. Plus, we'd bought a certain number of hours on a sort of 'club card' that only worked at a specific train of internet stores in Italy, and after Cinque Terre we knew we were heading to Spain. So we wanted to use up our remaining hours rather than waste them, and back to the internet cafe we went! We spent another morning doing journal pages, with me working on the actual site and Glenn back at the hotel typing up some new journals there. Around lunch time, he came to get me and we visited the fresh food market place for some bread, cheese, meats, and fruit. It didn't come out quite as we'd planned and we had to improvise a little on assembling our sandwiches, but we did ok. I managed to get some spills all down the front of my pants though. Never have I been known as a neat, clean eater! And I doubt I ever will, at this rate...but I digress. After our meal, we went back to the internet cafe for another 4 hours of hard work, got most of the journals up to date as far as what we'd written (which was only up to the end of Greece, I'm afraid), and called it good. We would work more on catching up in Cinque Terre, or that was the plan. For our last night in Florence, we found a nice pasta place that was part of the chain we'd once eaten at in Bologna with our friend Shayne, then called Glenn's sister to say happy birthday. We talked for a little while, then headed back to the hotel for our final sleep before heading north again. |
