Glenn's Venice Journal #4

Saturday was our last planned day in Venice. What were the most important things to do today? What must we do? We must mail some things home (to lighten the load, if you know what I mean), visit the fish market, and enjoy a gondola ride (what would our friends say if we had been to Venice and not taken on gondola ride!!).

We accomplished sending a box through the general mail. Of course I won't get started about what we learned today about the Italian mail system. Let me just say that we expect the box to arrive home in about 3 weeks (hopefully before we do!!). (Don't you always wonder what kind of adventures your mail goes on without you ever knowing!!! What would people pay to know???) O.K. I am getting a little off track, but I am writing this on Sunday night around midnight and getting a little slap happy.)

Now we are off to the fish market. What a wonderful place to see the locals in their natural state. If you ever get to Venice, don't miss it!!! This was a recommendation from my previous boss at work and it was definitely an excellent choice (Thanks Barb!!). We definitley took pictures because I could not describe the flurry of activity abounding there. The choices of fresh fish, fresh vegetables, and fresh flowers. Don't get in the way, the pace is moving very fast to sell everything each stall owner has. It will only be fresh for so long!!

The only thing left to do today was the gondola ride. We took off to the Piazza San Marco and decided to take an afternoon gondola ride. Of course, we could not do this without a bottle of wine so we ran back to a store, grabbed a bottle of wine, which the owner pleasantly opened for us, provided 2 plastic glasses, and sent us on our way. The gondola ride was a little overpriced but it's the romance that counts. We then sat in San Marco square for about an hour (Erin had to feed the pigeons again!!) and chatted with a gentleman from San Fran.. From there we went back to the room, dropped our day pack off, and headed out to our final dinner in Venice.

Erin was up for anything, but specifically wanted spaghetti tonight. So how did we end up at a Chinese restaurant, you ask? It was close by and we were ready for something a little  different. (How many days in a row can you eat Italian before you would want something different, even for one meal?) The dinner was actually pretty good and included spring rolls, soup, rice, and two main courses all for 25 Euro's. We felt pleased with our choice.

The open-air fish market was very busy, and included a wide variety (above), including a few things we didn't recognize! (below)
