18.8.07 Heartland 1: Wanganui in gutsy 5 pointer vs E. Coast A performance of character from the Butcher Boys today with the forwards strong against their Ngati Porou-East Coast counterparts and five points snaffled with two late tries. Less than a thousand brave souls turned up in dreadful conditions only to find themselves locked out till 2.15pm with Cook's Gardens staff failing to find the keys. Visser and Dravo went over for the Butcher Boys with two unconverted tries in the first stanza, with a Mason penalty making it 13-0 at the half. That score held until halfway through the second spell as Wanganui struggled to score in atrocious conditions that made handling extremely difficult for our dangerous outsides. Halfback Denning Tyrell made sure of it with a 59th minute penalty 20m out straight in front and an encouraged black and blue side cracked on looking for the full points. Center Logan Vaughn lost the ball in the tackle over the line after a break on the blindside with 11 to go but quickly made amends with 9 to go taking a skip pass outside his marker from Denning Tyrell for Wanganui's third. Tyrell, who had switched to first-five by that point made the conversion to seal a terrific game for him. He then hit the right hand upright from wide out after Hulua scored the crucial 4th with 4 to go 4m from touch after a comedy of errors. That made the final score, 28-0 - five crucial points given that there were some high-scoring matches at other venues. Peter Rowe made a major difference when he came on and the lineout went well snaffling plenty of ball off NP-EC feeds. There were nine players making their debuts, a likely record according to the Wanganui commentary team. This team is still building and will be better for the run-out against a brave NP-EC side that came to play but was ultimately outclassed. In other games in Pool B, North Otago racked up a half century, though they leaked points at the other end in Oamaru, while a Poverty Bay side that has impressed in the pre-season were too good for the locals in Timaru. Other scores: Pool A: Thames Valley 13 Mid Canty 7; King Country 34 Horo-Kapiti 13; Wairarapa Bush 46 West Coast 0 Pool B: North Otago 51 Buller 20; Poverty Bay 24 South Canterbury 7 |
