Rumiko Takahashi
(A real legend.)

In Japan, everyone reads manga. Businessmen, children who can barely read, 19 year old boys, 8 year old girls… the list is endless. (Which is why I'm stopping there.)

For some reason, all manga seems to be classified either as shonen or shoujo manga. (Boys' or girls'.) Obviously, some boys read some shoujo manga, and some girls might prefer shonen stuff but the important thing to appreciate is that they are labelled as one of these two types. (Whereas in the west, it's only really boys who read comics and stuff marketed for girls tends to be a bit rubbish, meaning that the comic-reading girls I know avoid these as much as I do.)

Now, normally, shonen manga is written by men and shoujo manga by ladies. Artists writing for the other gender tend to not do so well.

It is because of this that Takahashi-san is a bit of a legend - she successfully crossed this divide and is still writing brilliant Shonen manga. (Although to be fair, the line was blurring, so it was probably only a matter of time.)

To be continued...
