WATERgeographer |
...a resource for teachers, students, and others who ponder about water resources & California regional geography |
The flow of water... from Joe's Pond in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont to the riparian vegetation of a Californian arroyo...the sometimes lazy ebb of the Rogue...the thundering vengeance of the Kern River...the thrill of the vast expanse of the Great Lakes. These are the places I seek. Standing in the cool shroud of Rose Valley Falls, watching the selfish Southern California water drip...drip...drip down a wall of mosses and maidenhair ferns, in an area accessible but unknown to most of the megalopolis of the Los Angeles urban area. These places calm me and beckon me. I am helpless against the irresistable pull of the water. Water. In a desert place. The wonderment of Mullholland's engineering masterpiece bringing the water to Los Angeles...the tranquility of the Owens Valley and the moonscape of dry Owens Lake. Getting stuck overnight in my father's jeep in Sespe Creek in and waking to mountain lion tracks circling our vehicle...aahh..that's where this water wanting started... in a wild river...a four-year old wondering about the water. |
