Earliest Act of Parliament for regulating watermen, wherrymen and bargemen of the Thames

1555

Act of Parliament introducing apprenticeship and enacting that there should be "appointed eight persons of the most wise, discreet and best sort of watermen, being householders and called the overseers and rulers of all the wherrymen and watermen."

1585

Grant of Arms

Act of Parliament extending apprenticeship

1603

Hall at Cold Harbour first mentioned

1626

Ordinances in which, inter alia, the Charities are first mentioned

1666

Hall and most records destroyed in the Great Fire

1670

Hall rebuilt on the same site

1700

Act incorporated the Lightermen with the Watermen.  Apprenticeship extended.  Poor's Fund formed

1715

First Race for Doggett's Coat and Badge

1721

Third Hall erected on the site of the second

1780

Company removed to St Mary-at-Hill upon the completion of the present Hall

Company incorporated by Act of Parliament

1839

Almshouses erected at Penge (The Royal Watermen's Asylum)

Thames Conservancy formed

1859

Watermen's and Lightermen's Amendment Act consolidating and extending the Company's powers

1888

Almshouses erected at Ditchling (The Cottage Homes)

1908

Port of London Authority formed

1940

Hall damaged by enemy action (also in 1943)

1951

Hall and almshouses restored

1961

Trust established for after-school education among port transport workers (The Philip Henman Foundation)

1974

Almshouses opened at Hastings (Royal Cottage Homes for Watermen) by Princess Alexandra

Watermen's Hall reconstructed and extended (completed 1983)

Grant of Badge

Watermen's Hall re-opened by Princess Alexandra

H M The Queen visits Watermen's Hall

Introduction of new licensing regulations

Shallop "Lady Mayoress" presented to the Philip Henman Foundation by the Riverbus Partnership

28 Engineer Regiment affiliated to the Company

First lady competitor to enter and complete the Doggett's Coat and Badge Wager

Formation of a Traditional Rowing Association in conjunction with the Fishmongers' Company

1995

Philip Henman Foundation reconstituted at revitalised

Company Crew win first Cutter Race in the newly acquired cutter, the "Jim Holt"

Introduction of Large Passenger Vessel Endorsement License
