Calley sighed heavily and took another sip of her drink, then a longer drink, closing her eyes and taking another deep breath to try and relax before Adam came in. From the position she was seated, she could see the comings and goings of the other patrons as well as Adam would be able to. She watched the steady flow of people as she kept drinking, then readily agreed to another when Mary returned to check on her. "Adam's late again, huh?" Mary smiled down at Calley as she set her violet-colored cocktail on the table in front of her. "Yeah." Calley answered back, "What's new, huh?" "He'll be here.." Mary smiled and offered to get her some bread to soak up the alcohol she seemed to be consuming too quickly. "Oh..." Calley giggled nervously, "umm yes. I think I better. Thank you." "Coming up.." Mary lokked sideways at Calley for a moment and then over her shoulder at something Calley couldn't see. "He better hurry up." Mary chuckled. "I think you have an admirer." she said and moved out of Calley's line of vision. Calley held her breath as she caught sight of Taylor, their eyes met briefly and she felt as if she'd been slammed in the chest with a two-ton weight. Before she could assimilate the fact that Taylor was here, and looking right at her, Adam came striding confidently through the front door of the restaurant, as if he owned the place. Taylor's mind was a swirling mass of confusion as Calley's eyes met his. He hadn't realized he was stealing so may glances at her, and hadn't thought about what he would do, should she actually acknowledge his presence. The moment their eyes locked seemed to last an eternity, and he almost thought that she was going to come toward him, until he saw HIM come waltzing through the door, as if he was in charge of the whole universe. He was jolted back to reality at the sound of Zac's voice. "Tay. I told you." He was saying quietly as Courtney and Issac chatted on, unaware of the rest of the world around them. "Don't do this to yourself man. You wanna motor? Grab some beer and watch some movies?" Zac asked, wanting to sheild his brother from the pain Calley's mere presence caused, and wanting to wring her pretty, blonde neck at the same time. "No. We can wait a few.." Taylor answered, using his fork to poke at the remainder of the pasta dish getting cold on his plate. "Kay. Soon as you've had enough we're gone dude." Zac said, trying to maintain a civil demeanor. Calley fought her own body with everything she had, to keep herself from trembling as Adam strode to her, leaned down and kissed her cheek, letting his lips linger there for a moment before sitting down at the table with her. "He-Hello Adam.." she managed to stammer out before she took another long drink of that vodka and cranberry. "You look stunning, Cal. Thank you for not cancelling." he smiled at her and kissed her cheek again, hopeful because she was here, and didn't think of some excuse to get out of this. "It's not like you left me much of a choice, Adam." she said softly and took another drink. "Hey...slow down. Why are you so uptight, Cal? It's ME, remember?" he said and took the drink out of her hand. "I still have a headache Adam, it won't go away." she lied and took her drink back. "Maybe some dinner?" he smiled and motioned to Mary. Mary appeared at the table almost immediately, as if she'd teleported herself. She took Adam's drink order, sending the server out with it to take their order. They ordered quickly, Adam taking the opportunity to order for his wife, before she could speak. "Just keep the vodka and cranberries coming.." Calley muttered to the server as he made his way past her to the kitchen. "So how was your day, Cal?" Adam asked, "What did you do?" "Not a damn thing, Adam. My head still hurts and what am I GOING to do? I can't just call a girlfriend and go shopping all the time, it's useless...not only that, you've pretty much run all of my AQUAINTENCES off. I don't get invites, unless they are for one of your buisness functions or charity whatevers.." she snapped, slurring her words a little ,her face warm from the effects of her drinks. Adam took the drink from her hand and set it next to him. "What the hell is this about Calley. I am TRYING to give you a nice dinner out and you are being unreasonable." he said through clenched teeth, a false smile plastered on his face. Calley sighed heavily. "I appreciate it Adam. But I told you I wasn't in the mood for this kind of thing...I need to do something with my own life, Adam." she said, startling herself. She wasn't planning to start this conversation like this, but there it was. laid flat out on the table with no warning. "What do you mean, 'with your own life'?" he stared angrily at her. She was his WIFE, he was an influential buisnessman. He needed her to be there for him, not off doing some crazy, half-baked JOB or something like that. He made more than enough money to support the two of them, and 10 kids if she wanted to have them. Even if she didn't agree to having children, he didn't need her WORKING. How the hell would that LOOK in the circles he moved in? "I MEAN.." she took a deep breath and blew it out slowly. "I am tired of being your toy on a shelf, wasting my college education just to make you look good. I am a human being Adam, and certainly NOT a paid escort.." she said angrily. "I am starting MY job search tomorrow. Live with it." she said and took her drink back, then took a long swallow. Adam felt his blood boil and his face get hot. Where the heck was all this coming from? "JOB?" he gasped angrily, through gritted teeth. "Yes, JOB." Calley retorted, "and let go of my arm. You're hurting me." she said and took another drink. "I will ASSUME that this hair-brained idea is all that vodka talking." he growled, but let go of her arm. "We'll discuss it when you aren't loaded. For now, we are in a PUBLIC PLACE and you will act accordingly." he shot back. "I am not one of your flunkies, or some hooker that you can order around." Calley huffed back. "And I am NOT hungry." she shoved her chair out from behind her, yanked her sweater off it and threw it over her arm. |
