ENC 1145 Syllabus



Remember, all readings and responses should be read for the class day that they are listed; all on-line assignments may be found under the "list of links" located on the main page.

Week 1 (Jan. 7-11)


M: Introductions. Write a brief biography in which you include your name, where your are from, your major, interests, and any other information that you wish to include.
Print out ENC 1145 syllabus and ENC 1145 course policy sheet--bring these to class. Tour the web page and the links.

W: Discussion of course policy sheet and syllabus.


F: 1102 discussion concerning sources, citation of sources, and thesis. Bring Longman's. If time allows we will have an 1101 review about paper introductions and grammar.

Week 2 (Jan. 14-18)


M: Library day. This is the day that you will begin, if you have not already, researching your topic. While many of you may not have a topic, you can at least begin to familiarize yourself with the research process. I encourage you to pick a topic and find the research early, as other students will also need many of the same sources that you will need.This is also a good day to ask any questions that you may have about finding sources. We will meet on the steps of the library. This is not optional. If you do not show up, you will be counted absent. If it is raining, we will meet just inside of the library doors (the area inside the doors but before you walk through the scanners).

Make sure that you cite a work in an anthology as such. For example: Ginsberg, Allen. "Howl." 1955. The Portable Beat Reader. Ed. Ann Charters. New York: Penguin, 1992.
Include appropriate headers in the upper right-hand corner; ex. last name page number.
Quotes over three lines or fifty words are block quotes and must be cited as such.
Cite after every use of researched material. If five sentences in a row use researched material, cite after every sentence, not just after the fifth sentence of the end of the paragraph.
Don't say "in conclusion" or "to sum up."

You should write the prospectus as a short, compressed draft of a research paper. Essentially, the prospectus will be an essay with an introduction and a conclusion. Do not use I, and remember that no personal experience should be included in this paper.

F:Draft of research paper due for editing workshop. The paper will be entirely written at this point. This session is a time for others to help proofread your paper. This workshop session will focus on sentence level issues such as word choice, grammar, and correct citation and integration of sources within the paper. You will bring in full six pages. Less than six pages will result in a ten point deduction from your research paper grade. I am using the research paper to take roll, so if you have no paper or less than six pages, I will count you absent.

Week 15 (Apr. 15-19)
