Born in Amherst County, Virginia, on February 24, 1772.

The sixth of eleven children of Joel and Nancy Crawford. 

1799 - Became a lawyer
1803 - Elected to Georgia House of Representatives
1807 - Elected to United States Senate
1813 - Became US Ambassador to France
1815 - Named Secretary of War by James Madison
1816 - Named US Secretary of the Treasury by James Madison
1817 - Named US Secretary of the Treasury by James Monroe
1822 - State of Georgia named a County in his honor.
1824 - Lost election for President of the US to John Quincy Adams
1827 - Named a superior court judge in Georgia, which he remained until his death in 1834
