| Angels With Dirty Faces FC (AWDFFC) was formed back in September 2001 by the now legendary and rather elusive founder, Chris Thomas. The team, a bunch of mates, was preparing for the first match in what would become an auspicious history by getting pissed up in the school days bop the night before. Upon realising that this new football team was lacking in a few departments such as skill and ability but above all players, Mr Thomas asked anyone he knew if they fancied a game of football the next day. This resulted in the recruitment of among others Nick Yarrow, and was to set the recruiting standards for the years to come. So the big day came, the Angels kicked off, and within 20 seconds had taken the lead. Ninety minutes later they had lost 7-2 to Pity Utd. During the week that followed Chris asked any of the players to try and recruit any football players they knew for the next week, resulting in the signing of Sam Marrs. This signing reaped immediate benefits as Marrs scored his first for the club with a mazy run down the left flank before finishing, in a 2-1 victory for Angels. Great things were sure to follow. This was not to prove to be the first false dawn for Angels however. In fact, it was the start of a run that could best be summed up as absolutely dreadful encompassing a record 13-2 defeat being handed out to the Angels by the all conquering Uni Hall Tigers, this being despite the match day signings of some University First XI players. Similar results followed with the few highlights including Sam Marrs' attempts to score with as many different parts of his body as possible. Though rarely his head. Not long after this, Angels recorded their fourth point with a spirited 4-4 draw with Real Ale Sociodad, a game that saw Yarrow getting hospitalised for the first, but certainly not the last time. Soon to follow were the three points gifted by DRP for not turning up, despite Angels only having five players, one of them being on crutches. At the turn of the year, the Angels were struggling and stumbled their way to a record at the end of the season of: P: 8 W: 2 D: 1 L: 5 F: 19 A: 45 Pts: 7 However, due to the redevelopment of DRH, the season still resulted in promotion and there was always the cup. In which the Angels lost 7-3 to Sporting Les. For some of them, their first encounter with the guy soon to be known as the Fat Ref. Come May, the Angels entered the Raisin Sixes, and in good Angels fashion highlighting our Scottish roots, got knocked out in the first round. The first season of Angels was over, and with it came the shock retirement of captain and founder Chris Thomas. The baton was to be passed onto the partnership of Sam Marrs and Nick Yarrow. Next |
