Teen 1: Sure you do dad, you always have a story! Tell us the one that you loved as a kid.

Dad: oh!... I know one!

kids get excited and gather around dad to listen.

Dad: Once upon a time, long long ago... There was a mean, greedy, cold hearted man named Ebinzer Scrooge...... He was so greedy that he wouldn’t close his business for Christmas. He had a nephew, Bob Cratchit that worked for him. Cratchit really wanted to be home with his family for Christmas Eve, but old Mr. Scrooge just said Christmas.... "Bah Humbug".....

(Grandma and Mama enter from the Kitchen. Mama is shaking her head, Grandma is wiping her hands on a hand towel and throws it over her shoulder, She puts her hands on her hips. They stand behind Dad)

Mama: (sarcastically) What are you doing?

Dad:(with a proud smile) The kids wanted me to tell them a Christmas Story, So I am telling them about "Scrooge".

Grandma: Son, Why don’t you tell them a REAL Christmas story?

Dad: I am! Scrooge is a great Christmas story!

Grandma: That’s a good story, but they need to hear THE REAL Christmas story!

Child 3: Grandma do you have a Christmas story to tell us?

Mama: Grandma knows the best story ever! A Story about the greatest gift of all!

All kids: (Excited)Tell us Grandma!

Grandma: (Grandma takes a seat beside her son and takes the Bible from the table holding it on her lap) OK, gather round...

(Mama sits beside grandma taking the youngest child in her lap. Children turn to grandma.)

Grandma: This is a story about the reason for the Christmas Season. One night a long time ago, in the city of Nazareth there was a young woman named Mary, she was not much older than your sister. She was engaged to a young man named Joseph. They both loved God very much. One beautiful starry night an Angel came to Mary while she was sleeping....

(Curtain opens,Light up on Mary sleeping center stage and Angel voice is heard:)

Angel Gabriel: Mary…… Mary…..

(Mary awakens looking frightened and confused)

Angel Gabriel: Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!. I have wonderful news for you!

Mary: (sits up, still sleepy, confused and scared)Favored One? What do you mean? Who are you?.... What news?

Angel Gabriel: I am Gabriel, an Angel sent by God. Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus, He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.

Mary: I am not yet married to Joseph, How can this be?

Angel Gabriel: The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; The Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

Mary: (kneeling and bowing her head)Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.

(light dims to black. Mary exits. Joseph comes to center stage as grandma speaks, appears to be deep in thought)

Grandma: Now in those days a woman that was with child and not married could be stoned to death. When Joseph went to Mary and learned that she was with child. He didn't know what to do, He didn't want her to be harmed, He loved her very much but was confused. Should he marry her? He prayed for an answer..... That night the same Angel that came to Mary appeared to Joseph....

Light brightens on Joseph praying

Angel Gabriel: Joseph….

Joseph looking up at the light startled.

Angel Gabriel: "Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will have a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. So this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: Behold, Mary shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel.

Joseph: I will go and take Mary as my wife.

(Joseph bows toward the light. Light dims to black. Curtain closes and scene changes)

( light comes back to Grandma, Joseph and Mary come around to walk up the isle as Grandma talks. With Joseph’s arm around Mary and Mary looking tired.Curtain opens slowly as they approach stage.)

Grandma: After the Angel Gabriel visited Joseph, Joseph went to Mary. Trusting in what the Angel said and having great faith in God they where married.

In that time Caesar had made a decree that all people return to their homeland and be counted. Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem. Mary was due to have her baby at any time. The city was very crowded, Joseph seen an inn in the distance

(Joseph and Mary approach the inn and knock the Inn Keeper comes to the door.)

Joseph: Sir do you have a room? My wife is ready to have a child, she is very tired and we have traveled so far.

Inn Keeper: I am sorry sir, there are so many people that came to be counted for the census. We just have no more room at the inn. I see that she is weary. If you do not mind, I have a stable where you can rest, you will be warm and dry, the hay is fresh you can make her a comfortable place to sleep. The animals will not bother you.

Joseph: (Shakes the inn keepers hand)Thank you sir, May God Bless you.

(Curtain Closes, change backdrop to stable scene Mary Joseph & Baby Jesus)

Grandma: They went to the stable and prepared for the Mary to give birth. Once Jesus was born, Joseph laid clean straw in a manger, wraps the baby in clothes they had brought and laid him in the manger. It was said that even the animals bowed down when the baby was born.

Child 1: Grandma, do you think Mary knew how important the baby was?

Grandma: (Smiles)I'm sure she did.

(Curtain opens to manger scene spot light on. "Mary did you know" begins, singer is off stage (or track plays) Mary and Joseph look loving at the new baby. Angels enter one at a time and encircle Mary, Joseph and Baby as song is being sung. Light dims after song.)

Grandma: Jesus was indeed a special baby. So special that the Angel Gabriel appeared to shepherds in the fields to let them know that the Savior was born. God even put a bright star in the sky to show them the way to find Baby Jesus!

(Show shepherds enter stage right, Light bright on shepherds. The shepherds act very frightened and stare at the angel with their hands shielding their faces.)

Angel Gabriel: Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people, For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you:(Star lights above manger scene as this line is said) You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.

Grandma: "And suddenly several angels appeared praising God and saying:

Angels: (at stable scene moved to right of stage turned toward shepherds)"Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men! (return back to stable scene quietly as shepherds speak.)

Shepherd 1: Did you see what I saw? This is not a dream is it?

Shepherd 2: No, this is from God. Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about!

(Shepherds come to manger scene as Angels sing "O Come all Ye Faithful" Shepherds bow down to baby and Mary)

Grandma: There where not only shepherds that came to see the Jesus, but also Kings of great nations. When they saw the bright star, they rejoiced knowing the Savior had been born. When they arrived to Bethlehem, they found the baby with Mary, and fell down, and worshipped him. They gave him gifts gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

(Enter Kings stage right bringing gifts handing them to Joseph slowly one at a time and kneeling at manger as this was being told by Grandma. Light dims and characters freeze as the rest of the story is told.)

Child 2: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh?

Grandma: These where precious gifts that represented kingship, divinity, mankind and mortality. We give gifts at Christmas to show our love to others as the Wisemen showed their love to Baby Jesus and as God has shown his love to us.

Mama: Do you know another great gift in the bible?

Child 1: um......healing the sick?

Grandma: that was a great gift, What about the gift of salvation?

Child 3: Salvation?

Grandma: Yes, if Jesus hadn’t been born there would be no hope for the world, Do you know that he promises that if you believe in him, accept him in your heart, ask forgiveness of your sins, and trust in him that you will have everlasting life?

Child 2: Wow... live forever?

Mama: ...in Heaven, Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead and He promised to make a place for us in heaven and return for us!

Teen 1: wait... isn’t that what Easter is about?

Grandma: yes.. we celebrate Easter because Christ did die on the cross and he rose from the dead, the "Easter Story" is the ultimate gift because without his sacrifice we could not have our sins forgiven and be saved. We celebrate Christmas because of the birth of Jesus, God’s gift of love to us. "God so love the world he gave us his only begotten son." his birth was the beginning of the greatest gift of all!

Light dims. Spot light on manger scene. Song (Away in the manger) intro begins softly, Family gets up and goes over to the manger, Mary looks at them and smiles, she hands the baby to one of the children who kneels down beside her.

Child holding baby Jesus: Wow! He is a wonderful gift from God!

Child 2: Happy Birthday Baby Jesus!

Cast looks at "SKY" as angel speaks last line

Angel Gabriel: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Curtain Closes.
