“What if Christ Had Come Down From the Cross?”

(This is a simpler version with fewer lines for kids.Teachers lines stayed the same as original version)

Props for skit: Chairs, lesson books, bible

Characters:

Sunday School Teacher

Child 1

Child 2

Child 3

Scene opens:

Sunday school class opens their lesson book on Easter Sunday morning to discuss the crucifixion of Christ.

Teacher: Good Morning! I have a question for you this morning...can anyone tell me what Good Friday means?

Child 1: “Yeah! It’s the last day of school for the week!”

(children laugh)

Teacher: “Well that’s one thing that is “Good” about Fridays, but do you know what it means in the bible?”

Child 2: “Isn’t that the day Christ died on the cross?”

Teacher: “That’s right! I have another question, you really have to think about this one. Most of you know the story about how Jesus died on the cross, and how he rose from the dead three days later, and accepting this is how we become saved. I want you to think about what may have happened if Jesus decided NOT to be crucified, what do you think the world would be like now?”

Child 3: “You mean Jesus could have decided not to die on the cross?”

Teacher: “Yes, he could have changed his mind, (opens bible) If you read in Matthew 26 verse 39 it says: "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.". This verse shows that Jesus was a man and as a man he knew what was about to happen and was afraid, but he also knew that he had to follow God’s will in order for God’s promise to be fulfilled. He could have just said “let this cup pass from me” and not went through with it. What do you think would have happened if he did that?”

Child 1: “Wow, everything would be different”

Teacher: “In what way?”

Child 1: “Well, I guess no one could get saved.”

Child 2: ”and would that mean that the bible would be a lie?”

Child 3: “so how would our sins be forgiven? I know in the old days they used to kill animals, lambs and birds and stuff as a sacrifice, would we still have to do that?”

Child 2: “I guess that if Jesus didn't die on the cross, there would be no more love, God sent him because “he so loved the world”, and Jesus died because he loved us and wanted us to go to heaven.”

Child 3:” and if there is no love, we couldn’t love one another, no one would care about each other any more.”

Child 1: “ and if no one cared, the world would be a terrible place, Sin would take over the world and no one would care.”

Child 2: “ I don’t want to even think about it. I wouldn’t even want to be born!”

Teacher: “I wouldn’t either! That’s why I asked this question, to make you see what a precious gift God gave us on Good Friday and of course Easter when Christ rose from the dead. You see, Jesus was a perfect man, he knew no sin, he was tempted to sin, as we all are, but he CHOSE God over sin. He went through so much suffering for us so we wouldn’t have to, he loved us that much! He went through humiliation, beatings, having a crown of thorns stuck on his head, being stabbed in the side, Big nails hammered through his hands and feet, and hung from a cross for everyone to see, and he had done nothing wrong. He did all that for us, for you and me. He is even preparing a place for us in Heaven to be with him. He didn’t have to do all of that, but he did. and he CHOSE to do it. He didn’t come off that cross, he stayed there. You can make a choice too. There is no sin that can not be forgiven because he shed his blood for us. So if you haven’t yet, won’t you make a choice to follow him? Follow his example of love and obeying God’s will. All you have to do is believe and accept that he died for you. It’s as simple as asking him to come into your heart and forgive your sins. He did the hard part to make things better for us, now it’s our turn to show him how much we love him too.

spotlight moves to cross on stage with Christ standing waiting for those to come to him, song “What Sin?” begins to play.

We perform “What Sin” in this way:

Props: Cross with nail (For hanging the “sin” signs), 2 Robes (Black and White) A blue sheet hung up and a sign that says “Sea of Forgetfulness”. (The black robes are tossed behind the Blue sheet after Christ removes them from the people one by one.) The “sin” signs can be written on poster board cut in half with string added to tie around the neck, write the words on the back so it can be seen as they come out and kneel in front of Christ.)

Christ is standing in front of a cross as the song plays, the characters come out one at a time dressed in two robes, (white underneath, black on top) with signs around their necks (worn on the back) with different types of sin (abortion, drug user, alcoholic, etc..we use about 10 different sins) as we come out one by one, we kneel down to Christ, he takes away the sin and hangs it on the cross, removes the black robe and throws it into the "sea of forgetfulness" to reveal the white one, (to represent his forgiveness) he hugs us and we walk to the side and wait until everyone has been forgiven. After all have come out and all are in white we encircle Christ holding hands and kneel down to pray until the song ends.
