Commander C.L. Harvey of the Tullibee Base has gained approval from the Ocean Springs Board of Alderman to erect a memorial honoring the memory of the submarine USS Tullibee (SS-284), and thirteen submarines built at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Originally, Harvey and members of the Tullibee Base, in conjunction with the Magnolia Rebel/W. J. Cheek Chapter of SubVets WWII, presented the proposal of the memorial back on October 9th to the Biloxi Port Commission, then to the Biloxi City Council on October 22nd. After several months of meetings with the City Council, the Mayor of Biloxi decided not to allow the monument to be erected at the original proposed site in Biloxi, explaining that he wants to reserve the site to honor people from Biloxi. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee Chairman read the disappointing news in the local paper and invited Harvey and the Tullibee Memorial Committee to erect the monument on their grounds. The site is located in Ocean Springs, MS, just east of Biloxi. |

"We met with the Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen and with the Vietnam Veterans group and have the full blessings of both," said Commander Harvey in an e-mail message to me on March 1st. "This site is much better than the one in Biloxi and [the mayor and the Biloxi City Council's] refusal was a blessing in disguise." The submarines being honored are as follows: Hull_No Name Delivered Decommissioned SS 284 TULLIBEE 11/11/1942* 3/26/1944** SS 581 BLUEBACK 6/4/1960 10/1/1990 SSN 590 SCULPIN 5/31/1961 8/3/1990 SSN 592 SNOOK 11/4/1961 10/16/1986 SSN 596 BARB 9/27/1963 12/20/1989 SSN 607 DACE 4/17/1964 12/2/1988 SSN 621 HADDOCK 12/20/1967 4/7/1993 SSN 639 TAUTOG 8/30/1968 3/31/1997 SSN 648 ASPRO 2/20/1969 3/31/1995 SSN 652 PUFFER 7/31/1969 7/12/1996 SSN 647 POGY 5/21/1971 6/11/1994 SSN 680 WILLIAM H. When does Commander Harvey expect the memorial to be erected? "We are in a full-fledged fund raising mode now and hope to have enough to manufacture [the memorial] fairly soon. We would like to have it in place by Memorial Day, but if not then, by July 4th." (Thanks to Commander Harvey and Commander Bob Hayes for the information in this article.) |
