Commander C.L. Harvey of the Tullibee Base has gained approval from the Ocean Springs Board of Alderman to erect a memorial honoring the memory of the submarine USS Tullibee (SS-284), and thirteen submarines built at Ingalls Shipbuilding.

Originally, Harvey and members of the Tullibee Base, in conjunction with the Magnolia Rebel/W. J. Cheek Chapter of SubVets WWII, presented the proposal of the memorial back on October 9th to the Biloxi Port Commission, then to the Biloxi City Council on October 22nd.  After several months of meetings with the City Council, the Mayor of Biloxi decided not to allow the monument to be erected at the original proposed site in Biloxi, explaining that he wants to reserve the site to honor people from Biloxi.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee Chairman read the disappointing news in the local paper and invited Harvey and the Tullibee Memorial Committee to erect the monument on their grounds.  The site is located in Ocean Springs, MS, just east of Biloxi.

How to make a contribution to
The Tullibee Memorial
When does Commander Harvey expect the memorial to be erected?

"We are in a full-fledged fund raising mode now and hope to have enough to manufacture [the memorial] fairly soon.  We would like to have it in place by Memorial Day, but if not then, by July 4th."

(Thanks to
Commander Harvey and Commander Bob Hayes for the information in this article.)
