The next day I got called to Mr. Douglas' office during homeroom. He is the Dean of the student body, and also the disciplinary force of the school. When my name was called over the announcements, everyone looked at me for a moment, so I grinned in reply and left. When I reached his office, there were quite a few peepers in there for dress code violations. He just sat calling off names and their punishments. Finally, he had said my name, then he started to laugh. I grinned again, then said in my defense, "It was after the bell rang!" "That's still not an appropriate way to exit the school," Mr. Douglas responded, still laughing a little. He gave me my first detention, and I was again proud of myself. I'd actually done something for a change. I left his office and returned to homeroom, then I told my friend, Kristi, what happened. She looked at me, surprised, then said, "You got a detention?!" I nodded, then grinned. She then said something to my surprise, "Aww! I wanna detention too!" The homeroom bell rang, which began the rest of the day. We both left smiling. Later at lunch I told Lacey, another friend of mine, what had happened, and she said the same thing that Kristi did. "You got a detention?!" I smiled and nodded, still proud of myself. "Kristi said to me earlier, 'Aww! I wanna detention!' Do ya think she'll really get one?" I asked her. Then I was surprised again. Lacey said, "Aww, cool! We'll get detentions too." I grinned. "Alright, if ya want one," I said in reply. When they both told me that they wanted detentions too, it really made me think. It helped me to realize what good friends I really had, and of how I can take them for granted at times. In all reality, I have great friends. I learned that on the day I got my first detention. Thinking of all this made me smile again; I felt lucky. The following day, when Kristi and Lacey were in PE and waiting for the bell to ring, Mr. Douglas walked through the gym. When he walked by them, they stopped him and asked for detentions. He looked a little puzzled, but he told them that it would be alright. That same day I had found out about this, and I laughed. I was so happy and felt lucky to have friends like that. |
