*music* "It's my entire life." -Davey Havok, AFI |

No, really, it is my entire life. I am deeply saddened when I hear horrid pop songs on the radio, most of which are written by the Matrix, which take away totally from what music is supposed to mean. I have heard enough: oh baby whoa's love rhymed with sent from above you broke me heart, tore me apart and various other lyrical offenses. I think being raised in a house full of music (regardless of the fact that most of it was twangy shit country mixed with a nice spoonful of bluegrass and the ocassional Pat Benetar ballad) is what made me appreciate the movement of music so much, but it is my passion for words that bring the lyrics to life. How can people just listen to the radio and never bother to examine the words? Do you lose your brains in the generic hooks and cliche choruses? Stop now if you answered yes. To cure the pop madness that may be rotting your brain, I suggest you put down the Good Charlotte patch and pick up as many of these albums as you can. This list will never be complete: AFI, Sing the Sorrow AFI, Black Sails in the Sunset AFI, Very Proud of Ya Fiona Apple, When the Pawn Fiona Apple, Tidal The Essential Clash Galore, The Cure Tragic Kingdom, No Doubt (please download the old skankin stuff) Anything Etta James, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Otis Redding The Best of Al Green The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Lauryn Hill The Best of Aretha Franklin Jill Scott, Jill Scott Any Tiger Army CD Any Joy Division CD A James Taylor CD The Joshua Tree, U2 Bleach, Nirvana Nirvana Unplugged Lauryn Hill Unplugged Anything Ramones Ben Fold's Five Live Album Any Incubus CD Something Elvis musicforthemorningafter, Pete Yorn Anything by The Replacements A New Order CD Social Distortion, Live from the Roxy The Globe Sessions, Sheryl Crow Anything Johnny Cash (rock out, you rebel) Something Misfits Fly, The Dixie Chicks Anything Allison Krauss and Union Station Any Epitaph compilation album ... and the list could go on I do not claim in any way to posess the key to musical freedom. I am always looking for underground and unsigned bands, old music I may have missed, or a band who may have redeemed themselves through careful revisions of lyrical and musical flow. Send me your musicians, your lyrics, your punked out princes and masters of bass. I want to hear what you've got. Rock out- *ashley* |
