Originally, Rhodey dresses in a regular pilots uniform or army fatigues when he is employed as Tony's pilot at Stark International. Later, at Stark Enterprises, Rhodey begins to dress more up market, often clad in designer suits similar to Tony. |
No known relatives Rhodey's best friend is Tony Stark - they go way back to Vietnam. Rhodey also gets to know Bethany Cabe, but is probably not as close. When Stark International is taken over by Obadiah Stane, Rhodey is befriended by Morley Erwin and his sister, Clytemenestra. The three of them, together with Tony Stark head out to California and form the new company, Circuits Maximus. Rhodey dates Marcie Pearson for a period of time until she betrays him. He later dates Rae LaCoste. |
As Iron Man II, Rhodey takes on all of Tony's old enemies. Of particular note is Obadiah Stane. Rhodey becomes estranged from Tony on at least two separate occasions. First, when Rhodey suffers from delusions following the cybernetic headaches from the Iron Man helmet. Secondly, when Tony Stark apparently 'dies', leaving Rhodey in charge of Stark Enterprises as War Machine - the second time is more long lasting and serious, with Rhodey feeling that he has been betrayed by Tony. On both occasions, the two come to blows, with only Bethany mediating between the two the second time round. |
Residence: |
During the Viet Nam war, James Rhodes served as a pilot in the United States Marines. During a military confrontation, Rhodes's plane was damaged by enemy fire. Although he managed to land safely, during his attempt to get his battle-damaged plane airborne again, Rhodes encountered Iron Man, wearing his prototype grey armour. Rhodes was subsequently attacked by the Viet Cong, but was aided by Iron Man. Rhodes allowed Iron Man to replenish his armour's power supply by draining the helicopter's batteries. After a lengthy trek through the jungle, the two of them happened upon an enemy base upon which they stole a Vietnamese helicopter and proceeded to an American encampment. At their adventure's end, Stark offered Rhodes a job as his personal pilot. Once Rhodes had finished his military duty, he eventually accepted the position and served Stark as both his pilot and aviation engineer. When Stark was incapacitated from alcohol abuse as a result of Obadiah Stane's manipulations, Rhodes donned the Iron Man armour to battle Magma and began serving as a substitute Iron Man. As Stark was too preoccupied with his personal problems, Rhodes turned to Morley Erwin for assistance in working the armour. When Stark International changed hands and was bought by Obadiah Stane, Rhodes, as Iron Man hired himself out as a freelance mercenary and fought such villains as the Mandarin, Thunderball, the Radioactive Man, Vibro et al. Some time after donning the armour, Rhodes began to experience severe headaches as a result of the cybernetics in the helmet not calibrated properly to his brain patterns. Subsequently, Rhodes began to suffer from extreme paranoia, manifesting itself as increasingly irrational, hostile and aggressive behaviour. When Rhodes behaviour eventually became dangerous to innocent civilians, a now recovered Tony Stark donned a 'recovery' armour and attempted to intercept Rhodes, with eventual success. |
