In 1996 the world saw the release of Resident Evil a game that truely redesigned the way that games were played and presented. Resident evil had a gripping storyline, likeable (and hateable) characters and intense action. The ability of a game to scare was almost unheard of in the mainstream market except for games such as Alone In the Dark.
The games play system was also updated from other "scary" games, the game changed depending on how you played, characters may die or the surroundings may change. One noteable change is the death of Barry if you do not run to his aid when you hear a gunshot at a certain part of the game. Before Resident Evil arose zombie games were not unheard of but they werent very serious such as Dawn of the Dead as the graphics werent good enough to take the game that seriously. However with Resident Evils new 3D environments and gripping storyline it was all that was needed to draw you in and literally chew you up. The game was also hard to play in its own rights as from the begining of the game ammo for the weapons was a problem and taking on bosses such as a giant snake or a huge spider was extremelly difficult with a knife. The game relied upon the players resourcefulness and  ability to solve puzzles while taking you for a white knuckle ride that changed the face of horror gaming forever.
