Chapter 3

“What are you doing?” Shane hissed, pushing Donna off him.
“You want it as much as I do,” she said coming back near him.
“No I don’t! Donna, get off me!” Shane screamed as he struggled to push her off him. She resisted and kept kissing him everywhere imaginable. There was a knock at the door. The door wasn’t closed properly and with the force of the knock the door flew open. Shane looked up and saw Anna and Nicky standing at the door looking gobsmacked. “Uh…This isn’t what you think it is,” said Shane pushing Donna off one last time.
“Don’t deny it Shane,” said Donna.
“I thought you were supposed to be Hollie’s friend,” said Anna coldly. “You’re no friend if you sleep with her boyfriend behind her back. You!” she said looking at Shane. “You were her world!” With that she ran off. Nicky tutted under his breath while giving Shane an evil look then took off after Anna.
“Look what you’ve done!” Shane shouted at Donna. “You’ve ruined my life!” He quickly pulled his trousers back on and ran out of the cabin.

Anna ran into the cabin and slammed the door behind her. Nicky soon followed but shut the door more calmly. “Are you ok?” he asks after seeing that she had been crying.
“She’s one of my best friends. I can’t see her being hurt like that.” Nicky put his arms around her.
“It will all work out in the end.”
“Who knows how long it has been going on.”
A knock on the door startled the pair. Nicky went to open it and let all the others in. Jai saw that Anna had been crying. “Hey. You two had a row or something?” he asked.
“No,” said Anna. “I just bumped my head and it brought tears to my eyes.”

After dinner everyone joined some more people by the lake where there was a bonfire near the edge. Shane managed to drag Anna away from the lake without anybody noticing. “What do you want?” she asked him coldly.
“This afternoon. You got it all wrong. Nothing happened. Donna was coming on to me. I was trying to push her off.”
“It didn’t look like that to me. Or Nicky. How long has it been going on Shane?”
“How long? Nothing is going on. You saw one thing and blew it up to something bigger. If you tell Hollie I will find a way to make Nicky turn his back on you.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“Watch me,” Shane turned and walked away.

For the rest of the holiday, Anna isolated herself from everybody else. She didn’t do anything with them. On Sunday afternoon she rented a boat and went to the coves half a mile out to sea. She didn’t tell anybody where she was going. She didn’t want them to know. While she was inside the coves she sat down to think.

I don’t care what Shane does. I have to tell her. I can’t let Shane keep deceiving her like that. What’s the worst he can do to me and Nicky? I could tell Nicky what he said. He would believe me wouldn’t he? No. Shane’s his friend so he probably wouldn’t. If I told anyone anything I would probably ruin everything between everyone. I can’t do that.

Anna had been inside the cove for over an hour. She stood up to get back in the boat and she realised it wasn’t there anymore. While she had been thinking the tide had come in and had washed the boat away. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her mobile. She tried phoning Nicky but her phone just beeped at her. There was no signal on her phone. She was stranded. “Damn!!”

Nicky wanted to talk to Shane but didn’t have much chance all day. At 10:30pm he knew Hollie was with the other girls in the bar so he walked over to Shane’s cabin. He put his fist up to the door to knock but stopped when he heard Shane shouting. “I don’t like you, I’ve never liked you, and I never will like you! Because of you Anna took things the wrong way. Because I don’t want Hollie to know what happened do you know what I did to her? I threatened her Donna. She’s become a really good friend and now I’ve made her hate me. I regret hurting her just like I regret ever meeting you. You may be Emily’s friend but you’re not mine. I don’t want to know you.” The door to the cabin flew open and Shane ran out almost knocking Nicky over. He was surprised to see Nicky there. “I’m so sorry Nick. I didn’t mean to say anything nasty to Anna. I got a bit out of control.”
“It shouldn’t be me that you’re apologising to. I’m sorry about the mix up. It just looked like you two were…” Nicky was so sickened by the thought that he couldn’t continue.
“Let’s not think about it. I’ll talk to Anna in the morning.”
“Ok. I’m going to bed. See you in the morning.”
“Goodnight Nick.”

Anna wrapped her arms around herself. It had been a warm afternoon so all she was wearing was her shorts and t-shirt. The water had risen dramatically since nightfall and no matter how far away she was from the edge of the water, it still always managed to touch her toes. The night was getting colder and colder. Eventually she fell into a restless sleep.

Nicky woke up at 4am. He looked at the bed next to him. Anna wasn’t there. He put on his dressing gown and went outside in the chilly air. He sensed that something wasn’t right. He went over to Claire and Mark’s cabin and began pounding on the door. A sleepy Mark answered. “Is Claire here?” Nicky asked him.
“Yes,” Mark answered. “Is something wrong Nicky?”
“Anna hasn’t come back yet.”
“Maybe she didn’t want to wake you up or something so she stayed with someone else.”
“Yeah, probably. Sorry Mark.”
“It’s ok mate. See you in a while.”
Nicky went to bed but he couldn’t get back to sleep. He knew something wasn’t right.
