About Australian Shepherds
Much as I enjoy my dogs, Australian Shepherds aren't the best choice for everyone. Aussies are working dogs and are still used extensively on farms and ranches. They certainly can make great family pets but potential owners need to be aware of their heritage. They need LOTS of daily excercise and regular training. Most aren't content to simply lie around the house. Aussies love to follow you and they always want to be a part of what you are doing. They thrive in active homes where they are allowed to be part of the family. Without an outlet for their energy and intelligence, Aussies may amuse themselves in ways which are not "amusing". This drive and enthusiasm does make them excellent candidates for performance sports such as agility, obedience, flyball, herding, etc. They are equally happy to be your jogging, hiking, or biking companion. Another thing to keep in mind is that most Aussies retain considerable protective intstincts. This is not a Golden Retriever! Aussies require plenty of socialization in order to help them become good canine citizens.

The most common age for people to get rid of their Aussies is between 1 & 2 years of age. Once the cute puppy stage is over some people aren't prepared for the time and commitment that goes into owning a young, smart, active dog. The sad result is that Aussie Rescue in many parts of North America is overun with young Aussies in need of a home. Please learn about the Aussie before you buy. The time spent will be well worth it.
