View a visual representation of the MYP ideology What is it? The Middle Years Programme offers a broad academic base, which incorporates the ideals of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The driving forces of the Middle Years Curriculum Model are the Areas of Interaction which include Approaches to Learning, Community Service, Health and Social Education, Environment and Homo Faber, (the technological genius of mankind). These areas are not specific courses, rather they are themes which are incorporated within the teaching of individual subjects. The student's experience is manifested in the Personal Project which is produced by the student during the fifth year of the programme. Principal Goals & Educational Spirit of The Middle Years Programme 1. Global Education To provide every student in grades 6-10 with the opportunity for a global education where students are aware of their own interactions and responsibilities within the world-wide community. 2. Communication To enable students to build his/her own personality through structured thinking and to further enable that personality to fit successfully into society by developing it with oral and written communication skills. 3. International Awareness To achieve the goals of the International Baccalaureate Organization by awakening in young people an interest in the cultures and attitudes of people with backgrounds different from their own. This is achieved by making students aware of the fundamental values common to all types of intercultural exchange. Which students? All students grades 6-10 at Fleming-Ruffner Magnet Center are automatically enrolled in the IB Middle Years Programme. These students may be performing at different levels of academic rigor since the Areas of Interaction are incorporation into all subjects, at all levels. What makes the IB MYP the best? This programme offers the highest quality education available at the international level. It insists upon the interdisciplinary mastery of skills while developing creative and critical thinkers. Through the Areas of Interaction, students are taught the application and communication of their moral, social and cultural values as well as intercultural awareness. |
