Roanoke to expand IB program K-12 Roanoke City Public Schools is making application to offer additional IB programs at the elementary and middle school levels. Highland Park Learning Center, an elementary magnet school, is implementing the IB Primary Years Programme this fall as it seeks authorization for the program from the IB Organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. James Breckinridge Middle School also is applying for an IB Middle Years Programme as it begins implementation.Once the programs are approved, Roanoke will be one of just a few districts in the country with a K-12 IB program! Although neither the primary nor middle years programme is a prerequisite for the diploma program, both offer an excellent introduction to the philosophy of the IB curriculum. The programs serve all students who attend those schools. However, since Breckinridge is not a magnet school, it's program is available only to students who live in that attendance zone. Breckinridge IB students can continue at Fleming.
IB applications due Jan. 31 For information or applications, call IB coordinator, Shelia Balderson, at (540) 853-1583. |

Samantha Hamlin,10th-grade full diploma candidate, and Charles Brogan, a 12th-grade certificate candidate, took part in a variety of workshops. Samantha particularly enjoyed sessions on play analysis and portfolios, which are required for the IB theatre arts exam. Both students also attended a professional production of a Monty Python play and recommend such symposiums for serious theatre students.
