My General Feeding Information

I prefer to mix my own seed so I know exactly what the birds are eating. I use a basic canary seed and Finch mix (no additives, coloring, etc.) and add my own concoction of other seeds. This includes: yellow millet, Japanese millet, steel cut oat groats, Nyger seed, canary seed, flax, anise, celery seed, and marjoram.

As a supplemental food, I provide a mixture of prepared dry egg food, crushed cuttlebone, mineral dusted oyster shell. As parent birds begin feeding their young, I add Exact feeding formula powder into the eye food in order to ensure an even distribution of nutritious foods for the chicks.

All my birds have extra vitamins added to their water once a week. In addition to a seed diet fresh foods are given daily. These foods include, but are not limited to: broccoli, celery, carrots, romaine & endive lettuce, apples, grapes, orange slices, frozen peas, dried yogurt (designed for birds), and hard boiled eggs.

A dried herb mixture is always provided. This includes: basil, parsley, oregano, marjoram, coriander, celery seed, sage, thyme, and rosemary.
This is a good probioctic, and the canaries will take what they ned to maintain a good healthy body

Daily Nestling/Egg Food Diet
This diet is appropriate for all finch species This is a supplemental diet to be fed in addition to the birds' regular seed diet.

This diet should be fed to parents at least ten days prior to hatching of eggs and continued roughly two weeks after chicks start fledging

--------------------------------------------------

6 whole eggs (including shells)
1 large cuttlebone
3 cups yellow cornmeal
2 cups instant potato flakes
1 cup dry baby bird formula
1/2 cup light brown sugar

--------------------------------------------------

(*) Scramble eggs, cooking them until done all the way.

(*) Rinse discarded shells and bake in oven for roughly 10 minutes at 350 - make sure shells do not burn.
Adjust time accordingly for various ovens.
The shells should crumble easily
(*) Let eggs and shells cool

(*) Crush cuttle bone and egg shells into powder form. This can be done easily enough with a hammer, or by using an old coffee grinder.

(*) Mix powdered cuttlebone and eggshells, cornmeal, potato flakes, sugar, and formula evenly.

(*) Crumble eggs into small pieces. Add eggs and mix evenly.

--------------------------------------------------

Mixture can be frozen to preserve freshness, and thawed before giving to birds
