Claire McKenna, 110 Ireland's Best Tin Whistle Tunes (with guitar chords and 2CD edition).
I haven't seen this tutorial yet, but Mary aka Whistlin'Dixie has graciously supplied the following comments (thanks Mary!!):
The book starts out with very easy Airs played slowly with a nice guitar strumming accompaniment in the background. As you progress thorough the book, the tunes, of course, increase in speed and level of difficulty. The book's divided into Beginners, Improvers and Advanced. And if you're a really raw beginner, the first 28 tunes have all the fingerings shown, as well as the musical notes and guitar chords. Heck, she even marks where you should take a breath! (Phrasing, man!)
I would choose this book based on the fact that if you dont have another friend who plays whistle, I bet you might have one who plays guitar! Then you have someone to play with, and dont have to jump right in to a session somewhere, particularly if you're shy or feel "somewhat inadequate" ~ it's fun to have someone else to make music with! And if you're only playing along with the CD, then you are playing along with a guitar as well, and not simply another solo whistler.
I had meant to get L.E. McCullough's book and CD collection, too, but I already have one where he is playing fast, and I mean to tell ya, I almost cant recognize some of the tunes! He's way too fast for me, which is somewhat discouraging. The one where he plays the tunes more slowly sounds good, but then again, it costs qutie a bit more than the one I recommended above |
