Chapter 9 |
(The nurse shows Carol and Charlie to Kayla’s room) Nurse: Here is her room…she might be a little out of it…the anesthetic probably hasn’t worn off completely yet. Charlie: Thank you. Nurse: You’re welcome. (The nurse leaves and the parents walk into the room. They see Kayla hooked up to machines, she’s pale, and she opens her eyes) Kayla: (in a soft voice) Do my eyes deceive me…or are those people my parents? Charlie: Hey sprout. (Walks over to her and sits in a chair next to the bed) Kayla: No no…it’s them. Hi daddy. Carol: (walks over) How are you feeling? Kayla: Hi mommy…I feel drugged…and like I’ve been shot. Carol: You were dear. Kayla: Crimey. Charlie: Everyone is here. Kayla: (looks around) But I only see two people. Charlie: The rest are in the waiting room. They didn’t want too many people in here. Kayla: Is boy here? Carol: Oh my goodness…he’s still in the cafeteria. Charlie: I’ll go get him. (Gets up and leaves to find Jimmy) Carol: You scared me to death young lady. Kayla: Nice to see you too ma. Carol: Do you remember what happened? Kayla: All I remember was picking a pack of winterfresh gum to be my something blue. Carol: Anything else? Kayla: You know what they say…memory is the first thing to go. (Starts to laugh) Ouch…mental note…don’t laugh. Carol: Does it hurt anywhere else? Kayla: Not really. But then again…I am doped up on drugs. Carol: Kevin and I were having a talk before we got the call. Kayla: He’s still in one-piece right? Carol: Yes…I told him that I thought you guys were rushing this…but I wouldn’t be missing my only daughters wedding. Kayla: Well, I’m glad you’re here. Carol: I can’t believe that someone did this to you. (Starts to cry) Kayla: (sniff) Don’t cry mom…cause then I’ll start crying…and that hurts. Carol: Sorry. (Gets herself together) (Charlie and Jimmy come in) Jimmy: Bout time you’re done with surgery. Charlie: (smacks Jimmy in the back of the head) Be nice. Jimmy: Ouch…and she knows I was just joking. Kayla: Oh. (Starts to cry) (Sniff) Ouch. (Sniff) Jimmy: You going to be ok? (Sits next to Kayla’s bed) Kayla: I think so. Charlie: Do you remember anything? Kayla: Whoa…déjà vu. No…for the second time…I don’t remember what happened. (Few minutes pass) Charlie: We should let Kevin come in soon…poor boy is going nuts. Kayla: No. Carol: No? Kayla: I want to see everyone else first. Charlie: But Kayla… Kayla: Please daddy. (Puppy dog eyes) Charlie: Gosh darn it…someone better hold him back…cause I know that he might try and jump me when I tell him that you want to see him last. Jimmy: I’ll protect you dad. Charlie: I’m a dead man. Carol: Ok…we’ll send in Liz, AJ, and maybe someone else too. Kayla: Thank you. (The family gets up and leaves and goes to the waiting room) Kevin: (sees them come in and gets up) Good…my turn. Charlie: (places Jimmy in between him and Kevin) No man. She doesn’t want to see you yet. Kevin: WHAT?!? Jimmy: HE SAID…SHE DOESN’T WANT TO SEE YOU YET! Charlie: Good job Jim. Jimmy: I’m going to die now aren’t I? Charlie: I love you son. (Kevin goes and sits down) Carol: Liz, AJ, Sandra, and Howie can go in…just not too long ok? Liz: Ok. AJ: (walks over to Kevin) Want me to say anything to her? Kevin: (silent) AJ: I’ll take that as a no. |
