Kayla: (cheery) Hi mom. (Kevin hands her the glass of water) How was your flight? Carol: Unpleasant as usual. Kayla: That’s nice. Gotta go…(starts to leave but Kevin grabs her and sits her down next to her mother) Kevin: (whispers to Kayla) You talk. Kayla: So…how’s dad? Carol: Fine…he’s in Russia again otherwise he would’ve come. Kayla: Oh that’s nice. You think he’ll bring back another scarf for you? Carol: Maybe. Kayla: Ok. So…we’ve added a few things to the house since the last time you were here. Carol: I see that. (Points to the love seat) Did Kevin pick that out? Kayla: Actually I did. Carol: Oh I should have guessed. Kayla: (starts to fume) Not everyone can have your taste mother. You know those white couches you have are to die for! Carol: Your father and I picked those out. Kayla: Just saying is all. Carol: Let’s cut the chitchat. The only reason I came down here is because your father kept on yelling at me to do it. I still don’t like the way you chose to live your life. Kayla: But it’s my life mother…not yours and I’m happy…doesn’t that count for something? Carol: I just don’t want you to regret anything…like falling in love with…with a musician. Kayla: There is nothing wrong with loving a musician. Nothing wrong with it at all. Carol: If you say so. Just don’t come crying back to me when he breaks your heart. Kevin: Mind if I say something? Carol: Yes I do, I’m having a conversation with my daughter! Kevin: Well this is my house too and I’m going to say this whether you like it or not. I love this girl more than anything else…if she asked me to give up singing right now I would…but she hasn’t and she won’t cause she loves me for who I am. Carol: (looks at Kayla) Are you gonna let him talk to me like that? Kayla: Yup. Carol: Where are your loyalties? Kayla: They are obviously with someone who loves me and can handle the choices I make in MY LIFE! HEAR THAT…MY LIFE! Carol: This was a mistake coming here. Next time your father wants to come down…he’ll be coming alone. Kayla: Fine…he doesn’t seem to have a problem with my life…so I don’t care whether he comes down or not…but if you come down to my house again and insult the man I love I might just to have to hurt you! Carol: Good bye Kayla. Kayla: Good bye mother! (Carol gets up and goes to her rental car and drives away) Kevin: I’m sorry about this…I just wanted you two to make up. Kayla: It’s ok Kevin…you know the saying…you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Kevin: (looks at Kayla) You know I will never hurt you right? Kayla: (gets up and hugs him) Of course I know that. Kevin: Good. |
